Who stole from whom? Rachel Naomi Perry (49) was the finance manager at a veterinary clinic in Tasmania (Australia) from 2016 to 2019. During this time, she abused her position to steal a total of 940,000 Australian dollars (approximately 600,000 euros) through over 475 fraudulent transactions.

How did this come to light? Perry apparently managed to siphon off money unimpeded for three years because she seemed to be the only person responsible for the finances. It was only when another person became active in her area that “anomalies” in the accounting were noticed, revealing the full extent of her misdeeds.
She immediately lost her job and was charged in court with 25 counts of “computer-based fraud” and one count of fraud. Additionally, she is said to have stolen larger sums from her ex-husband and various other sources. The verdict, which is likely to result in a prison sentence, is expected to be handed down next week.
Why did she do it? According to a psychologist’s report, Perry suffers from severe gambling addiction. This reportedly started in the 90s, and since then, the woman has repeatedly gambled away large sums in casinos.
However, she funneled the stolen money from the veterinary clinic into a casino game called Heart of Vegas. But this is not an online casino where you can win money. Rather, it is a casino simulator where you only win virtual coins that have no value outside the game.
According to her own statements, she didn’t care; she just played the casino game every day and sunk thousands of euros into it without ever seeing a cent in real money winnings. According to the Crown prosecutor, she was “in her own world” when she played the game.
When she was questioned by the police after her conviction, she stated that she knew she was doing something wrong. She was just waiting for someone to finally catch her and put an end to her actions.
In court, she pleaded guilty and is expected to receive therapy during her time in prison to manage her gambling addiction. However, she likely won’t be able to pay back the money to the veterinary clinic.
