In League of Legends there is a new skin for the champion Ekko, reminiscent of his role in the Netflix series “Arcane“. Although players generally like the skin, there is a specific criticism of the “Firelight Ekko” skin: it is significantly more expensive than it should be.
What kind of skin is this?
- It is the latest skin for the LoL champion, Ekko. It was showcased in a YouTube video on December 7, 2021.
- The “Ekko Firelight” skin references Ekko’s role in the Netflix series Arcane: for instance, he pulls out a hoverboard when teleporting back to base. He also puts on a mask.
- The skin is now on the test server and was introduced in a YouTube video.
“Too little value to charge full price for a skin”
What is the exact criticism of the skin? Although the skin is generally well received, there is a systemic critique, as it is supposed to cost 1350 RP (about €10) – but according to the current skin system of Riot Games, it is not worth that.
- A new model without new graphics or sound effects costs 750 RP.
- A skin with only some of the new elements costs 950 RP (about €7.50).
- A skin for 1350 RP would need to have new graphics and sound effects for all abilities and recalls to justify its 1350 RP price.
The new Firelight skin for Ekko does not offer any new sound effects. It is also criticized that the mask cannot be put on or taken off at will. This was possible with skins from earlier times.
Has this ever happened before? Yes, a Reddit user mentions that in 2017, the skins of the esports team SKT1 were also sold for 1350 RP without bringing any new sound effects. After the protest, Riot Games had to backtrack and endow the expensive skins with their own sound effects. They should do the same now.
People are urged to give feedback to Riot Games that the skin either needs new sound effects or a lower price.

“They are shifting the standards”
Why is this so important to people? The perceived triviality of the skin being somewhat expensive or the absence of sound effects has received more than 10,000 upvotes on Reddit.
People take this very seriously and say that a precedent should not be set here.
A user explains: In the past, most cool skins only cost 975 RP, and only a few, which were even better, were available for 1350 RP, while the even more expensive ones were extraordinarily good. Nowadays, all skins would generally cost 1350 RP, and only garbage skins would be priced at 975.
Riot Games would be shifting the standards here – essentially creating a silent skin inflation. Apparently, they do not want to let the developers get away with this. A user states that this skin should not become a precedent.
