For League of Legends, Europe has had a disastrous time lately. All 4 teams were eliminated in the group stage of the LoL Worlds 2023: Not even G2 reached the quarter-finals. However, in 2024, the core of the best team Europe has ever had could come together again.
What was the best team Europe has ever had? Aside from Fnatic from 2012, who became world champions, but in a completely different time, the best European team has ever had was the 2019 version of G2 Esports. Back then, the two exceptional players Caps and Perkz teamed up to become world champions, even though both played the same role:
- The team defeated the top Korean teams Damwon Gaming and T1 with Faker at the 2019 Worlds. They became vice-world champions in 2019 and only lost to FunPlus Phoenix in the final in Paris.
- This G2 was dominant in the league and became the series champion in the LEC.
- The team stayed together in that form for 2 years but broke up after 2020. G2 sold Perkz for reportedly $5 million to the USA at that time. In the following seasons, top laner Wunder, supporter Mikyx, and jungler Jankos left G2, leaving only the hyper-talent Caps as the core of a new roster.
Since they left G2, success has also eluded them
How have the players fared after G2? Mixed:
- The captain, Perkz, spent a year in the USA, where things went quite well, but then played in Europe for Team Vitality for the golden pineapple. There, nothing went well for 2 years.
- Top laner Wunder had a rough phase at Fnatic, somehow fell out with the team and was relegated to the bench.
- Jungler Jankos (28) seemed to be running out his career at the mid-tier Team Heretics, after G2 was no longer a contender.
Only mid laner Caps and supporter Mikyx are still – in the case of Mikyx again – with G2 and were able to participate in the last worlds, although without success.
Perkz, Jankos, and Wunder will probably play together for Team Heretics in 2024
This is the news now: It looks quite likely that Perkz, Wunder, and Jankos will play for Team Heretics in 2024, reportedly Perkz and Wunder have already agreed with the team. This is reported by sheepesports.
Thus, the core of the strongest EU team of all time is coming together again.
That’s the catch: All players are now 4 years older than at their peak and haven’t exactly excelled in recent years.
They will surely find a good supporter for the combo.
But the player who could make the exception, Caps, still has a contract with G2 until the end of 2025 and is probably not replaceable.
Perkz is already hinting at a move to Spain:
So there’s not really a lot of hope that Team Heretics will bring the Worlds back to Europe in 2024. It seems rather like an opportunity for frustrated Wunder and Perkz to find joy in LoL again after some tough years. There has always been the feeling that Perkz, Wunder, and Jankos understand each other excellently. Maybe they will end their careers there in Spain.
How cool G2 used to be can be seen in games against the then world elite:
