Seth ‘Scump’ Abner is a professional player of Call of Duty: Warzone. He also realizes that the shooter franchise is currently in a crisis. However, the early leaks and rumors surrounding Modern Warfare 2 give him hope.
Since the first rumors about CoD: Modern Warfare 2 surfaced, there have been reports about the game that it will feature a new game mode called “DMZ”. Trusted leakers like Tom Henderson repeatedly say that DMZ will heavily resemble games like Escape from Tarkov.
The idea that such a game mode could appear in CoD also gives CoD pro Seth ‘Scump’ Abner great hope. He believes that DMZ in its form could save Call of Duty.

CoD pro is excited about the idea but doesn’t want to “get his hopes up too high”
What is the leaked mode? If DMZ really resembles Escape from Tarkov, it means that there could soon be a playable mode in CoD that looks like this:
- You assemble a loadout from items you have already acquired in advance.
- You then search for more loot during the matches.
- Finally, you try to escape the map with this loot intact.
- Real players and AI opponents will try to prevent you from doing so with a combination of PvP and PvE.
- Loot that you successfully carried away can be used in the next match.
- However, if you die in a match, you lose (almost) everything you brought with you.
What does the pro say about it? CoD pro Scump thinks the idea that the latest Call of Duty could be playable like this is incredibly good. In the podcast of his esports team OpTic, he can hardly contain his excitement.

He does say repeatedly that he doesn’t want to “get his hopes up too high”, but in light of some statements, it’s hard to believe. Here is a small selection:
- “If they do it right, it could save CoD. If they do it right… Oh my God. Escape From Tarkov, CoD style, with skins… ooooh!”
- “If it’s a game like Escape From Tarkov… These games are addictive! You just have to try to find a balance, kill people and take their good stuff. That’s a great feeling.”
- “Killing opponents who have better loot, stealing a million dollars from them. That is so exciting. It is so much fun.”
However, he doubts that it will be an exact copy of Tarkov. He and his conversation partners suspect instead that it will be a faster version of the shooter hit from Russia. Because Tarkov is an extremely realistic military simulation – CoD will cater more to casual players, the pros suspect.
Gameplay concept from Escape from Tarkov is a new shooter trend
This gameplay concept is increasingly becoming the new trend in the shooter world. The German shooter hope The Cycle: Frontier is aiming for this and wants to reach casual players.

That CoD could attempt to follow this trend would not be a surprise. However, EA’s big shooter competitor has also tried this. With the mode “Hazard Zone”, Battlefield 2042 wanted to create its own version of Tarkov – and completely failed.
If CoD actually follows suit, it will be exciting to see how much success they will have.
