The survival MMO Last Oasis successfully launched into Early Access on Steam in April. However, it has since lost around 97% of its players. The developers are not worried about this.
What is Last Oasis? The survival MMO places you in a future where the Earth has stopped rotating. Large parts of the world are devastated, and the few survivors are trying to find resources, food, and water at the last oases.
Fierce battles for these oases are fought with wooden battle runners.
A heavy loss of players
How did the game launch? Last Oasis launched in April with around 33,000 players (via Steamcharts).
But since then, it has been steadily declining. Currently, there are only about 1,100 players online at peak times. This means the MMO has lost around 97% of its player base.
Why have so many players dropped out? Reviews on Steam indicate that there are several issues. These include bugs that cause players to lose their gathered resources. Additionally, gankers are harassing newcomers, attacking everyone who wants to try out the MMO. Moreover, there is too little content. Yet the online game launched so promisingly on the second attempt.
What do the developers say about the situation? The team is aware that a lot of players have dropped out and has an explanation for it:
We launched the game with a unique and new setting, great atmosphere, and in a pretty optimized state – especially in the early game. However, we had (and still have) a lack of content, a number of serious gameplay issues (especially in the endgame), and missing customization options.

Considering all of this, it’s naturally to be expected that people try it out, play for some time, and then leave while checking the state of the game from time to time. I won’t say we made no mistakes after launch, but mistakes are also something to be expected and part of the development of EA titles.
What do the developers want to do now? Of course, work continues on the game to fix the problems and introduce new content. However, the team does not seem particularly worried that so many players have dropped out.
The only thing we can really do now is continue development, fix the issues, and add more content and gameplay options. It’s understandable that the current numbers may seem alarming to many players, but it’s even more important that the game keeps improving and remains fun. Once we’ve solved all the major issues, it won’t be hard to bring players back.
