The day after the release of Sons of the Forest, the NPC companion Kelvin was considered a celebrated hero. However, dedicated builders are no longer so enthusiastic about the helper’s eagerness to work.
I could easily name a dozen survival games where an NPC helper like Kelvin from Sons of the Forest would have been a gift from heaven.
A helping hand in the hours of grinding for resources to fortify your base to military standards – I don’t feel safe until then. Kelvin carries logs like a champion, brings endless sticks, and collects berries as if there is no tomorrow.
No wonder the NPC companion is so popular. But I knew there was a catch. And if you want to fully enjoy the building system in Sons of the Forest, you should know about Kelvin’s dark side – he apparently doesn’t like treehouses.

“Don’t trust Kelvin!”
There are now several threads on reddit that address this aversion to Kelvin. Proud builders are gathering tons of wood to hoist their bases meters high. The pinnacle of architecture in Sons of the Forest.
But you shouldn’t let Kelvin help you with that. Otherwise, the work will be quickly undone:
With unbelievable confidence and without scruples, Kelvin cuts down the tree that was supposed to support the new home of the dedicated builder “Successful-System827”. He tried to prevent it, but there was no stopping the NPC’s eagerness to work.
You think that was an accident? No! Kelvin is fully aware of his action, even celebrating his demolition efforts, as the following video shows:
It’s nice to destroy the work of an entire day with a smile on your face. To give a thumbs up, to celebrate oneself. Don’t ruin it, Kelvin. We still need heads for the fence…
So if you want to try building a treehouse, never let Kelvin gather logs again. The chance is just too great that the guy will spit in his hands and ruin your efforts.
I have only built on the ground so far, and he has already shown me his dark side. While I was waiting in front of the fire with low health for a cooked fish, Kelvin threw a log at my forehead and knocked me out.
Since then, we often play “Catch the log” – the current score is 20 to 1 for me.
