Leya was deeply immersed in Hyrule over the weekend and is thrilled by Zelda “Breath of the Wild”. She wants to share her first impressions with you and tries to keep it as spoiler-free as possible.
I have been waiting with great anticipation for Zelda “Breath of the Wild” for months. This game was supposed to break the boundaries of the Zelda series, they said. Nintendo has truly accomplished that. This time, you don’t follow a prescribed path but are in an “Open World” adventure.
The more I saw and read about the game, the more excited and joyful I became. To be honest, I bought the Nintendo Switch just for Zelda and have since referred to it as my “Zelda machine”.
Can Zelda meet my damn high expectations?
I was very worried that I had set my expectations too high for Zelda and that it could only lead to disappointment. After just a few hours in “Breath of the Wild”, I found that my expectations have been exceeded by far.
I never expected such a work of art, and I ended up spending many more hours in Hyrule over the weekend than I originally planned. Really, what a game!
I won’t be taken by the hand
Right from the start, I noticed the dreamy atmosphere that Zelda presents. I wake up as Link from a 100-year sleep, without any memory. I’m almost naked and thrown into the adventure right away, without being guided by the hand. Zelda “Breath of the Wild” does not dictate which path I should take.
I have to find my own way somehow. Along the way, I meet the inhabitants of Hyrule who explain a thing or two to me. Whether I follow their advice is entirely up to me.
Whoops and double whoops
The attention to detail makes “Breath of the Wild” something special, and I quickly realize that everything in this game is well thought out. Right at the beginning, I crafted a small torch and accidentally threw it into the dry grass. This started a major fire. Whoops.
This did not stop me from standing too close to the fire, immediately scorching my first shield, and even catching fire myself. Double whoops.
In “Breath of the Wild”, I am indeed bound by many physical laws. I can freeze in frosty areas if I don’t have hot meals with me. How cool is that in a Zelda game?
A ticket to Hyrule, please
These are not the only details that make Zelda “Breath of the Wild” shine. Many have already said it, and I have to say it again. The graphics are stunning and incredibly imaginative.
Once I had my first mount, I simply rode along the paths and soaked up the landscape. Sometimes, I was disturbed by monsters that attacked me.
Everything seems to be lying in a dreamy fog, the landscape appears to stretch into infinity. I feel completely limitless and free here.
There were quite a few scenes in “Breath of the Wild” where I sat in front of the TV with my mouth agape, murmuring a “Wow” to myself. I would already take a vacation in the dreamy Hyrule.
Numerous side quests distract me from the main story
I don’t want to reveal too much about the main story and probably couldn’t if I wanted to. I have already indulged in countless side quests and have followed the actual story only minimally so far.
After my 15 hours of gameplay, there are no repetitions in the side stories, and I don’t feel like I want to rush through “Breath of the Wild” quickly. That’s not because the story is boring; quite the contrary. I just find way too many other exciting things to do and enjoy the countless details and the landscape.
I can hardly wait to pick up the controller again and go on an adventure with Link. So far, I have not regretted getting the Zelda machine and “Breath of the Wild” for a second. It also had the perfect difficulty level for me. I could comfortably play from the couch and relax. The Zelda-typical puzzles were challenging enough, and the combat was just right.
I haven’t died so much yet that it frustrated me, but I have died often enough not to find it too easy.
For me, Zelda is a masterpiece and a great video game art. I can highly recommend it to the dreamers and adventurers among you.
