Is Google Stadia a potential platform for the popular MMORPG Final Fantasy XIV? Director Naoki Yoshida commented on this in an interview.
What did the head of FFXIV say? Square Enix is in discussions with Google regarding a possible release of Final Fantasy XIV on the new Google’s cloud gaming platform, Stadia. This was shared by the MMORPG’s director, Naoki Yoshida, in an interview with the colleagues from WCCFtech.com.
According to Yoshida, the FFXIV team has conducted initial tests with cloud gaming. There was a problem with communication. It must happen between the player device, the Stadia server, and the FFXIV game servers:
[…] There are two different types of communication: One is rendering [on the player device] and the other is communication between the game servers. In other [single-player] games, there is only one line of communication for the cloud service.
Yoshida points out the latency issue, which is lower in single-player games and multiplayer games without dedicated servers.
At Stadia, the head of the MMORPG wants to wait and see if it establishes itself in gaming. One of the important prerequisites for this, in his opinion, is the availability of G5.
[…] Without G5, it will be quite difficult for players [to play], even if they have access to cloud gaming. It’s not that we [don’t want FFXIV on Stadia], but we want to observe it and explore it further, as there are currently still issues with the speed of communication with the server.
On which platforms is FFXIV also being released? The head of Microsoft’s Xbox division, Phil Spencer, announced FFXIV at the X019 conference for his platform. Although there is still no release timeframe for the MMORPG on Xbox, Spencer said:
[…] You can be sure that we will bring the game [FFXIV] to Xbox. […]
At a fan gathering in London, director Yoshida also expressed hope that his MMORPG will also appear on Sony’s next console, the PlayStation 5. However, Square Enix emphasized that this is not an official announcement.
Yoshida continues to follow his long-standing philosophy of wanting to release Final Fantasy XIV on as many different platforms as possible. Therefore, it would not be surprising if an official announcement really happens.
