Jason Schreier is a well-known gaming journalist who regularly shares insider information. In a new report, he says that there will be no new installment of Call of Duty in 2023. It would be the first time since 2005.
What exactly does Schreier say? According to his sources, Schreier claims to have learned that Activision Blizzard is skipping a new installment of the shooter series next year.
Since 2005, a new Call of Duty has been released every fall for 17 years. Because there is already a new installment in the pipeline for 2022.
Since the first installment of Call of Duty in 2003, over 400 million copies of the franchise have reportedly been sold.
Why was this decision made? The latest installment of the series – Call of Duty: Vanguard – has underperformed expectations for Activision. Some executives are said to have concluded that new installments are being released too quickly.
Also, Warzone, the free-to-play game of Call of Duty, is said to have drawn players away from the premium versions. The studio that was supposed to develop a new title is reportedly assisting with Warzone instead. More seasonal updates are planned here.
Schreier emphasizes in his report that skipping a new Call of Duty is not related to Microsoft’s acquisition. The company recently acquired Activision Blizzard for $68.7 billion.
However, there could be a change in plans if the acquisition goes through. That is expected to happen around summer 2023.
When is the next installment coming? According to Schreier, there should be a new installment in 2024.
Warzone is successful and likely to get a second installment in 2022
When is CoD: Warzone 2 coming? It has been confirmed that Warzone will get a sequel. This new game is expected to address ongoing problems that cannot be improved technically. Warzone 2 will thus represent a restart of the game on new and better hardware.
It is currently unclear whether Warzone 2 will be released in 2022 alongside Modern Warfare 2 or a few months later. This was the case with Warzone, which was released in March 2020 – several months after the release of Modern Warfare (2019).
The latest information from Jason Schreier suggests that Warzone 2 will be released in 2022, thus closely following Modern Warfare 2. However, there is still no exact date for both games.
