Over the years, many great and small heroes have died in World of Warcraft, including numerous important characters with extensive stories. Some of these characters we meet again in the “Shadowlands” – including a fan-favorite whose death affected many players deeply. We reveal how the story continues.
Spoiler Warning: This article contains some spoilers from the area of Ardenweald in WoW: Shadowlands. You have been warned.
The story of Ardenweald primarily deals with nature spirits. When powerful creatures die that have a strong connection to nature, they end up in Ardenweald. There they rest in so-called “Wildseed” and are tended to by the Night Fae. The Night Fae provide these seeds with Anima and watch over them until they can be reborn.
Ysera’s Rebirth in Ardenweald
However, players learn early on about a major dilemma. Because without fresh souls, there is no Anima either. The Night Fae have started to sort through the Wildseeds. Not all nature beings can be saved. Many of them “die” in their form as Wildseeds and are thus lost forever.
One seed turns out to be special, as it directly connects with the player. This seed only accepts Anima from the player, which is why the fae task the players with taking care of the seed.
Another special feature is that the seed creates nightmares that even manifest. At this point, the parallels to the Emerald Nightmare become clear, and one can guess which creature slumbers in the seed – Ysera the Dreamer and (former) Aspect of the green dragonflight.
As soon as the player resumes their travels, Ysera’s nightmares worsen. Throughout the questline, we attempt to piece together her memories. Along the way, there are (as flashbacks) reunions with Tyrande, Malfurion, her daughter Merithra, and also Deathwing.
Finally, we learn the reason why the seed is so restless and plagued by nightmares. Ysera repeatedly experiences the final moments of her life. Corrupted by the nightmare, she slaughters numerous players and elves at the Temple of Elune until she ultimately dies – again and again.
After Ysera is freed from the nightmare, the story ends for now (especially because the game then crashes). Exactly how the story finds its conclusion is still not entirely clear. However, it suggests that Ysera will play an important role again during Shadowlands. Since she also has new game files for a model, she will most likely appear.
Why is Ysera even in Ardenweald? Actually, all souls have been going to the Maw after their death for some time now and do not come to the other realms. However, an exception was apparently made for Ysera, as she made her way directly to Ardenweald, which the fae find strange. The reason for this could be the intervention of the Moon Goddess Elune.
In the cinematic in Val’sharah, one can see how Ysera is “lifted to the heavens” by Elune. Her spirit was apparently sent directly to Ardenweald – but that was also one of the best WoW cinematics of all time.
