Monster Hunter World: Iceborne is experiencing performance issues and deleted save files on PC. A patch is expected to fix this soon. However, nothing has been announced about what will happen to already lost save files.
The release of Monster Hunter World: Iceborne for PC was a week ago. The player numbers are nearly as strong as the release in 2018. Since the patch related to the expansion, many players have been reporting issues.
The developers have now stated on Steam that Patch 10.12.01 will resolve the issues in the coming days. They have made no statement regarding already deleted save files.
Several hundred gaming hours wasted
Here’s what Patch 10.12.01 will address: The issues players are having with Iceborne are no small matters. Many are struggling with significant performance drops. These lead to frozen screens, sometimes between 1 and 5 seconds. This primarily affects NVIDIA users with less than 3 GB VRAM. This should be resolved soon with a patch.
Additionally, the incompatible save data will be addressed. With an outdated state of your game progress, Iceborne cannot open the file. Players are then asked if they want to start a new game. If you click on that, your valuable game save will be overwritten.
Too late for many players: The statement about Steam and Twitter assures that they will address this compatibility issue. However, it does not mention what will happen to already affected players. Once the save file is overwritten, you may have to start over after possibly hundreds of gaming hours.
This has happened to many players. Accordingly, the frustration is high, which, along with the performance issues, leads to poor reviews on Steam. Some are expressing their concerns over Reddit:
I just came by to say that I too have lost all my hard work.

It’s clear that players are desperate. They have invested so much work into their save files, and now everything is gone. They wish for a restoration of their save file or at least some way out:
This happened to me as well. So many hours are gone! Please tell me there’s a solution for this, I don’t want to level up and quest all over again!

How you can avoid the loss: Unfortunately, there is still no solution for the already deleted save files. Lost game progress may remain lost. However, we can give you a few tips on how to avoid this when starting:
- Make a local copy of your progress before starting
- Do not under any circumstances click “Yes” when the game asks if you want to create a new save file. Exit the game in another way!
- Those who do not want to wait for an official solution via patch can use mods to make their save file playable
