On Steam, a new narrative horror game is being released that brings to life the worst fears of MeinMMO author Linda Knabe.
What game is this about? Still Wakes the Deep is a new narrative horror game that will be released on June 18, 2024, on Steam and was developed by The Chinese Room. Horror fans might already know the development team behind the game from titles like Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs, Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture, and Dear Esther.
The team has proven several times that they have a knack for horror. And the trailer for Still Wakes the Deep gives hope for another eerie adventure:
A few weeks ago, I first encountered the game on Instagram. My thalassophobia – the fear of the sea and deep waters – made me quickly close the video back then.
Today I rediscovered the game on Steam and decided to take a closer look. After all, I love horror games, and I was indeed curious about what it was all about. And indeed, Still Wakes the Deep looks like a very promising new game for all horror fans.
Especially, the awareness of how deep and unfathomable the ocean is intensifies this fear for me. It’s somewhat ironic that as a child, I always wished to be a mermaid. A mermaid afraid of her own home would certainly be something new.
On an Oil Rig in the Middle of the Scottish North Sea
You play a worker on an oil rig in the Scottish North Sea. Isolated from the outside world, you try to save your crew, as the oil rig is haunted by an unknown entity that is killing your colleagues.
I find the setting particularly interesting here, as it is something different from the usual villa, hotel, or hospital. In fact, it is exactly the setting that makes me particularly anxious. The thought of being trapped in open water and only seeing the raging waves beneath me is one of the most uncomfortable thoughts for me. I would prefer to face any disgusting monster instead.
Impressive Graphics Make the Horror Even More Realistic
You explore not only the interior of the oil rig but also the exterior and must walk over the walkways that hang between the buildings and the sea. Graphically, everything looks incredibly impressive and realistic as you move in first-person perspective. And as it says in the official Steam description, every step can be deadly, as only the raging sea awaits below.
In Still Wakes the Deep, it seems to be mainly about finding the right paths and not falling into the hands of the unknown monster or drowning in flooded corridors. As far as I know, you are not supposed to have weapons or special powers.
I think that Still Wakes the Deep could become a really good game for many horror fans since it ultimately addresses many fears. Whether you are afraid of the unknown lurking around the next corner, fear tight, dark spaces, or like me, fear the sea. Still Wakes the Deep could give many of you goosebumps. It might even become a game that every horror fan should play.
