The Xbox Series X not only poses a problem for players but especially for developers. Del Walker, a game developer who has worked on major games like Batman: Arkham Knight and Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, has a clear opinion about the little brother of the Xbox Series X.
What is the problem with the Xbox Series S? The Xbox Series S is the smaller version of the Xbox Series X. Here are the main differences between the two Microsoft consoles:
- the Series S has less RAM and video memory than the Series X (10 vs 16 GB)
- the processor of the Series S has only one-third the power of the Series X
- the Series S is only available in a digital version.
- the price of the Series S is 300 euros, making it about 250 euros cheaper than the Series X.
The Xbox Series S poses a problem for game developers: every game they develop for the Xbox Series X must also be made compatible with the Series S. This requires a greater effort and can lead to games not being as good as they could be without this optimization.
In general, it is easier to program a game for a console since the hardware remains the same, unlike with a gaming PC. However, if a game is to be released for the Series S, it must be adapted to the weaker performance of the smaller console.
You can take a closer look at the Xbox Series X in the official trailer:
“So annoying to optimize for this console”
What does Del Walker say about the Xbox Series S? The developer expressed his displeasure on X: “I wish the Xbox Series S had never existed. So annoying to optimize for this console.” His post is a direct response to Pyro’s post on X, which summarized what Xbox players have to endure.
Moreover, according to Del Walker, in the future there will be more major game releases that Xbox players may not be able to participate in. Del Walker also wrote that he has nothing against the Xbox Series X; it is just about the Xbox Series S. He simply dislikes having to optimize games for this console.
Not only did the Series S seem to pose a problem for the developers of Black Myth: Wukong. When the game was announced, Xbox players waited in vain for a release date for the Microsoft console. However, they could look forward to a collector’s edition, which is extremely expensive.
