Ben Starr is the English voice of Verso from Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 and is likely well-known to many players for his performance as Clive in Final Fantasy 16. The voice actor even sang on the soundtrack, although he may have overindulged the night before.
What was the downside for Ben Starr? The night before the recording for the Clair Obscur soundtrack started, Starr went out for drinks with his colleague Jennifer English, who voices Shadowheart in Baldur’s Gate 3, and other colleagues.
He not only ordered tequila shots for himself but also for the whole round. Unfortunately, he got a bit too eager and ordered more than he could get rid of:
I think I introduced a large part of the team to tequila shots as the evening came to an end. I believe I bought about 20 tequilas and was the annoying person at a party saying, “Drink your tequila shot!”. Obviously, they didn’t want them, so I ended up with way too many left over and thought, “Well, then I’ll just drink the tequila shots myself”.
Whether Starr suffered from a hangover the next day, he did not reveal during the interview with Game Spot. Despite all the tequila, he showed up in the recording studio the next morning and sang for the Clair Obscur soundtrack.
Voice actor also delivers a good performance as a singer
Did it harm him? As the publisher team reveals on X, they were satisfied with Ben Starr. Although Starr, as he says himself, has “only been in the industry for 5 minutes”, he delivered a good performance as a voice actor. The team writes that there is nothing Starr can’t do.
The press has also praised the soundtrack. In our own review on MeinMMO the soundtrack stands out particularly positively, but our sister sites GamePro and GameStar also praise the soundtrack in their reviews.
For those who want to be convinced of his performance: In a video on YouTube, you can see that Starr is part of the singers. From minute 8:39 you can see him briefly.
Where do people know Ben Starr from? The voice actor is especially known for his role as Clive Rosfield from Final Fantasy 16. In this role, he even won an award for Best Lead Actor at the Golden Joystick Awards 2023.
Ben Starr is also heard in Hades 2, albeit as Prometheus. The game convinced MeinMMO editor Dariusz Müller because he could really indulge in a skill. The ability fits perfectly with his lack of skill, as he himself writes: Hades 2 only needed 2 runs to convince me because one skill fits perfectly with my playstyle.
