In Hytale there are many animals you can find, but what are they good for and can you breed or tame them? You will find all of that here in our overview.
What benefits do animals have in Hytale? In Hytale there are many animals and depending on the biome, the diversity and population changes. In most cases, they won’t harm you, but as adventurers, it might be worth keeping an eye on them. Because they can provide you with decisive advantages:
- They can serve as a fast means of transportation (horses)
- They can provide you with food (meat, milk, eggs)
- They can equip you with resources (leather)
If you have played Minecraft, you will immediately think about taming the animals to then build farms. Since the release of Update 4, this is even possible and we will show you how to do it in the next part.
Breeding and taming animals: Is it possible?
Can you breed animals? Currently, you cannot breed animals yet; however, the feature is planned. Due to the early access release, Hytale has lost many features. The developers are currently focusing on the core game, but future functions, including breeding, are still to come.
So you cannot provide your animal companions with special food to make them breed. However, what you can do is build stalls and store certain species already until the “breeding” update is released. Until then, you will have to be patient.
Can you tame animals? Yes, you can tame animals since the release of Update 4. Here’s how you do it:
- Approach an animal
- Press “F” to use the tame button
- Now look at the speech bubble to find out which food your animal needs
- Equip the food and press “F” again
- Your animal has now been tamed
Additionally, you can manipulate smaller creatures with a feed bag.
They usually run away when they see you or a predator. However, with this bag, they stay curious, get hearts above their heads, and do not run away. You can craft the bag at the farmer’s workbench with the following materials:
- 10 x Wheat
- 5 x any vegetable
- 5 x any fruit
- 10 x Essence of Life
But that is also the only thing they can do. You cannot lure them to mate with it. This feature could also be implemented in a future update.
A bonus we can recommend is when capturing small animals. At your farmer’s workbench, you have the option to build a “Capture Crate”. With it, you can immediately capture small animals when you are near them. You can then release them into your farm and fill your stable.

What should I consider when building a farm? The good thing is: Your animals do not need food or drinking water. Therefore, they will not die if you confine them. When it comes to building, you need to know in advance which creatures you want to house there.
Depending on the size of the animal, you need to adjust the fences and gates accordingly. For small animals like chickens, rabbits, or even pigs, it is sufficient to build the farm only one block high.
Larger animals like horses need a fence that is two blocks high. This way, you can avoid them suddenly jumping out of the stable and escaping from you.
