The workbench is one of your most important tools in Valheim. MeinMMO explains how to upgrade it to the highest level and craft a tool rack.
What is a workbench? It is an important tool in Valheim. You need a workbench to craft a number of things, such as weapons, gear, or building parts. To unlock further options, you also need to upgrade the workbench and build various upgrades for it.
There are a total of 5 levels, each unlocking new options. The last level is not needed for new items, but it is necessary for the strongest upgrades for your weapons and equipment.
It requires materials that are not immediately accessible. In this guide, you will learn what you need and how to obtain the required items to unlock the highest level.
What can you do with a level 5 workbench? As mentioned above, you can upgrade your equipment to the highest levels with a level 5 workbench.
This includes, for example, the Black Metal Sword or the Iron Axe. Of course, you will also need the corresponding materials for the upgrades themselves.
Unlock recipe and craft tool rack
Here’s how to upgrade it to the highest level: First, you need to unlock the recipe. You do this by finding Obsidian, a rare material that is also needed for the upgrade to level 5. You will also need Fine Wood from birch trees and smelt Iron Scrap.
Then you can check your workbench to see what you need for level 5. Of course, you must first bring it to level 4.
These materials are needed for level 5:
- 4x Iron
- 1x Fine Wood
- 4x Obsidian
Especially Iron and Obsidian will require some effort from you.
Iron Scrap and Iron can be found in the Swamp Biome
Where can you find Iron Scrap? The material is mainly found in crypts in the Swamp Biome. To get into these crypts, you need to defeat the Ancient and find the “Swamp Key”. However, you should already have Bronze gear as the fight is challenging.
In the crypts, you will find muddy scrap piles from which you can obtain Iron Scrap. However, you will need a Bronze pickaxe for this.
Where can you find Iron? You can also find it in the Swamp Biome. However, the deposits are buried. A divining rod will help you locate them.
It is easier to simply smelt Iron Scrap for this. You will need to do this anyway to unlock the recipe.

For Fine Wood, you need to chop birch and oak trees
Where can you find Fine Wood? You get this type of wood by cutting down birch and oak trees. You can mainly find birch in the Meadow Biome.
However, be careful when felling trees, as in Valheim they can be quite unpredictable and deadly.
Obsidian can be found high up
Where can you find Obsidian? The material can only be found in the mountains. You will need an Iron pickaxe to mine the material. You will find the mining spots at high altitudes in the mountains of Valheim.
