DLC, cosmetics, houses – in addition to the purchase price and the optional subscription, you can also spend a lot of real money in the ESO Krona shop. But what do you really need from it? Is there a cheaper option? And what should you avoid? Here comes your shopping advisor. By Sascha Penzhorn
Although the base game is already packed with enough content for 100 or more play hours, certain DLCs enhance the game further. With content like Thieves Guild or Dark Brotherhood , you can join the Thieves Guild or the Dark Brotherhood and become master thieves and contract killers, complete with associated quests, repeatable missions, storylines, and skill lines.
This content will dig a corresponding hole in your wallet for the price of 2,000 Kronen each (see conversion table in euros). The Orsinium expansion leads you to the land of the Orcs and features the toughest solo challenge in the game: the Maelstrom Arena. However, you will also have to pay a hefty 3,000 Kronen for that. The paid downloadable content is very good, but it adds up quite quickly to being very expensive. Therefore, we recommend the Plus subscription.

Better Plus than DLC
With ESO Plus, you gain access to all content in the DLC section of the Krona shop. On top of that, you get more bank slots, space for furniture, a handy crafting bag for all characters on your account, and 10 percent more experience points. You also get some Kronen to spend for every month subscribed. However, keep in mind that access to the DLC will disappear when your subscription expires.
Cool cosmetics
In the shop section “Style Studio,” you will mostly find self-explanatory items: hairstyles, tattoos, decorative jewelry – the usual suspects. If you’re keen on a specific hairstyle that is not available in character creation, you are in the right place. An important sub-point of this section is called personalities, which grant your character completely new animations.
The Drunken personality, for example, causes your character to always be seen with a beer mug, which he regularly refills. He visibly struggles to walk and stumbles around like Captain Jack Sparrow himself. If you choose the Thief as a personality, your hero always looks around stealthily and moves crouched and sneaking through the area.
The offerings in the Style Studio change regularly. Generally, you can unlock additional cosmetics through events, achievements, and quests, so you don’t necessarily have to spend real money. However, those looking to customize their character more and who have the necessary money saved up will find it here most conveniently.
Ridiculous housing
It gets really expensive in the houses section. The fanciest player dwellings can cost as much as 10,000 Kronen or more – either to furnish yourself or (for an extra fee) fully furnished.
Once you own the houses, they serve as free fast travel points, and you can invite friends or set up crafting stations if you don’t like the free workbenches available throughout the game world.
Alternatively, the stylish houses can also be obtained with in-game currency if you have managed to save up a lot of gold.
Time-saving against Kronen
A practical use of transformation into a werewolf or vampire is available for 1,500 Kronen each. If you are a member of a somewhat friendly guild, you may be able to get bitten for free by another player.
But if you have no friends and don’t want to ask for a bite in chat, you can join Team Edward or Team Jacob for cash and without having to play through the corresponding quests first. And if you regret the purchase, you can buy the cure for a hefty 800 Kronen in the shop.
Players with secondary characters who prefer to pay rather than be active also find skill lines and sky shards in the shop. Don’t want to unlock all the skills of the Fighters Guild again? Not interested in searching for all the sky shards in Auridon? You can now also purchase them for Kronen. The only prerequisite is that you must have already unlocked them with a character.
However, this fun is not cheap either: Skill lines can cost a hefty 3,000 Kronen each, and sky shards can go up to 900 Kronen depending on the size of the area you want to skip. Quickly, that adds up to several thousand Kronen.
Riding lessons for Kronen are practical when you want to keep up with a Cyrodiil raid group, but your horse hasn’t reached maximum speed and endurance yet. However, a pack of ten riding lessons will cost a hefty 1,000 Kronen per attribute.

Alternatively, you can buy a riding lesson every 20 hours (real-time) from riding instructors for 250 gold pieces. While it may take a while to get all your riding stats to maximum, at least you won’t have to spend real money for it.
Bank and inventory expansions, as well as respecs for attributes and skill points, can all be obtained for in-game currency; you don’t have to buy them with Kronen. Only the ability to readjust your character, change names, or switch races can only be done through the Kronen shop.

The gamble with the Krona boxes
In addition to the regularly changing offerings in the Krona shop, where you can buy DLC, cosmetics, houses, and other goodies, there are also the Krona boxes. Each box contains a few randomly assorted items such as cosmetic pets, hats, costumes, hairstyles, and make-up.
With a lot of luck, an extremely cool mount may even drop that you can’t find elsewhere in the game. If you have your heart set on one of the rare mounts, gambling can quickly become very expensive. However, if you obtain a reward from a Krona box that you already own, the duplicate item will be converted into Krona gemstones.
If you have enough Krona gemstones, you can also directly buy any desired reward from the Krona boxes.
Very optional luxury
Little value for money is offered by helpers like Nuzhimeh the trader and Tythis Andromo the banker. Summoning an NPC at the push of a button, at which you can sell all (non-stolen) items or access your bank slot is quite practical, but you’ll have to pay a hefty 5,000 Kronen for this function.
Furthermore, shop NPCs do not function in Cyrodiil. “War is bad for business,” claims Nuzhimeh. However, we quite strongly disagree!
The upgrade to the Imperial Edition is also not exactly a giveaway at 2,100 Kronen. If you want to play as an Imperial, you have to get the upgrade. The mount included in the package is simply a white horse – horses are also available for in-game currency from the vendor or for considerably lower Kronen prices when purchased individually in the shop.
The also included Mara’s Pact, which allows you to “marry” a player to receive a ten percent experience bonus while playing together, may be worth it for players with a fixed co-op partner. However, it has been available at lower prices individually in the past.
Lastly, this upgrade also unlocks the Imperial style for customizing your equipment. If you are keen on all or several of these features, the package is definitely worth its Kronen; in case of doubt, however, there are also individual contents available at lower prices.
Supply packages for Kronen are nice, but also very expensive at 1,500 Kronen for the large variant. The experience scrolls contained within can be purchased in packs of five for a cheaper 1,000 Kronen. The poisons, healing potions, and food items in the package are not stronger than self-made (or traded) goods from crafting.
The repair kits are available for free in bulk from daily crafting missions for every crafter. And anyone buying soul gems for real money has lost control over their life.
