The survival game Valheim offers many possibilities for creative expression. Huge structures and buildings are part of it. However, they also need to be stable. The stability system is not very clear. We explain it to you.
What is stability in Valheim? In the new survival hit, stability plays a major role in construction. When building a house, stability indicates whether a component holds or collapses. This is determined by a color code:
- Blue: a foundation directly connected to the ground
- Green: stands on a foundation and is completely stable
- Yellow and orange: becomes increasingly unstable, but still holds
- Red: the next component connected to this one will collapse
When you have equipped your building hammer and move the mouse over a component, you can see its color. You can also increase stability – but not quite in the way you might think.
The YouTuber and streamer CohhCarnage also addresses stability in his video. We have embedded the video here for you if you want to see the building system in action:
Stability and better building in Valheim
How does stability work? Essentially, when building buildings, it depends on how far you build. Without supports, you can build up to 16 m (8 parts) high and 8 m (4 parts) horizontally with wooden components. This takes into account how far your last foundation is from the previous parts.
If you attach a slanting beam to a vertical structure, you can strengthen horizontal structures because you skip one component and strengthen the next one. Posts help keep the path to the ground and the next foundation shorter.
Normal cross beams, on the other hand, serve more of a decorative purpose. They also help you to make other parts snap together more easily. For stability, they are only somewhat useful.
How to increase stability: If you want to build larger buildings, you need to use better materials. They have special properties depending on the material:
- Core wood is inherently more stable, and beams can be built higher, extending stability further upwards. In our guide, we explain how to obtain core wood .
- Stone walls are considered foundations for wood up to a certain height – attached wooden floors remain blue or green even at great heights.
- Stone columns have the same function as stone walls.
- Wooden iron posts also carry the foundation property upward, similar to stone walls.
If you want to stabilize floors further up, you can use a post made of core wood and slanting beams to the sides. This way, you support the floor components higher up.
If you build stone walls as a foundation and then wooden walls on top, you can build significantly higher than just with wood. Ironwood posts can be stacked the highest; with them, you can support particularly tall constructions like towers.
If you use stability correctly, you can create huge buildings: Methalls, towers, longhouses with multiple floors … whatever comes to mind. Many players have already shown what is possible in Valheim. In our article, you will find 3 cool bases in Valheim that you can use as inspiration for your own.
