In the latest episode of House of the Dragon it’s mainly about one thing: dragons. Three of them are particularly in focus. Here on MeinMMO, you will learn everything you need to know about Team Black’s new dragons.
Attention Spoilers: This post contains spoilers for House of the Dragon, up to and including Season 2, Episode 7. Future events of the series are not discussed.
What kind of dragons are these? To gain the upper hand in the war against the “Greens,” Rhaenyra tries to mobilize more dragons for her side. Conveniently, there are three riderless dragons on Dragonstone.
And indeed, her endeavor is more or less successful. Even though some candidates fall victim to the fire, by the end of Season 2, Episode 7, there are three new dragon riders.
1. Vermithor
- Age: approx. 95
- Previous Rider: Jaehaerys I. Targaryen (deceased)
- Current Rider: Hugo Hammer
Vermithor is the second oldest and largest dragon in Westeros at the time of House of the Dragon. Due to his temperament, he is also known as the “Bronze Fury.”
According to legend, Vermithor hatched from an egg that Prince Jaehaerys received from his sister. By the time Jaehaerys ascended to the Iron Throne, Vermithor had accepted him as a rider.
This Jaehaerys was, by the way, the grandfather of Viserys I. and ruled during a comparatively long time of peace. However, the era was not entirely free of conflicts. For example, there were the third and fourth Dornish Wars, in which Vermithor made a name for himself as a terror to his enemies.
- Fun Fact: Author George R.R. Martin was inspired for Vermithor’s name by Vermithrax Pejorative, a dragon from the movie The Beastmaster (1981).
2. Silverwing
- Age: approx. 93
- Previous Rider: Alysanne Targaryen (deceased)
- Current Rider: Ulf White
The dragon lady Silverwing is considered comparatively gentle and friendly. Also in the book, she is the only dragon that does not kill any of the dragon rider candidates.
Her first rider was Alysanne Targaryen, who was presumably given Silverwing’s egg in her cradle.
Alysanne Targaryen was the sister and wife of King Jaehaerys I., whom we have already met as the rider of Vermithor. Together, they often flew throughout Westeros to visit their subjects and hold audiences. Accordingly, the dragons Vermithor and Silverwing also know each other well, as they spent much time together and got along well.
Moreover, Silverwing hates the cold North. Alysanne tried several times to fly with her to the North beyond the Wall. But Silverwing refused, although she was usually always obedient.
- Fun Fact: According to David J. Peterson, who is officially responsible for the languages, the Valyrian translation of the name Silverwing is “Gēliotīkun”.
3. Sea Smoke
- Age: approx. 29
- Previous Riders: Laenor Velaryon (whereabouts unknown)
- Current Rider: Addam of Holk
Strictly speaking, Sea Smoke is not a new dragon on Team Black’s side. Especially in the first season of House of the Dragon we saw him more often. His first rider was Laenor Velaryon, son of Corlys and later husband of Rhaenyra.
After Laenor faked his death and left Westeros, his dragon Sea Smoke remained on Dragonstone and mourned the loss of his rider. But now Sea Smoke is back – with a new rider.
Due to his young age, Sea Smoke is much smaller than, for example, Vermithor. He is considered agile and has already gained some combat experience in the war for the Stepstones.
- Fun Fact: The Valyrian translation of the name Sea Smoke is “Embrōrbar”.
The new dragon rider of Sea Smoke is Addam of Holk, a shipbuilder of the Velaryon fleet. We already know him and his brother, Alyn of Holk, from some scenes. The actor of Alyn, Abubakar Salim, is also no stranger: he is involved in the gaming scene.
