Place 3: Caraxes
- Current rider: Daemon Targaryen
- Former riders: Aemon Targaryen
Caraxes is the dragon of Daemon Targaryen. He has an unusually long neck and blood-red scales, which earned him the nickname “The Blood Wyrm.”
Like his rider, Caraxes is temperamental, eager to fight, and extremely dangerous. Despite his considerable size, he is quite agile.
He is not lacking in combat experience either. Caraxes’ first rider was Prince Aemon Targaryen, an uncle of Daemon, who used him several times in battle. Under Daemon as well, Caraxes brought blood and fire to his enemies in the war for the Stepstones.
- Fun fact: According to a sound designer, Caraxes suffers from a deviated septum, which is why his roar sounds so unusual.
Place 2: Vermithor
- Current rider: Unclaimed
- Former riders: Jaehaerys I. Targaryen
When it comes to sheer strength, few dragons in the history of Westeros can match Vermithor. Known as the “Bronze Fury,” he was the dragon of King Jaehaerys I. Targaryen, the grandfather of King Viserys I.
Jaehaerys used him several times in war, making Vermithor a battle-hardened dragon. The king ruled about 200 years before the events of House of the Dragon. Accordingly, Vermithor is quite old.
At the time of the series, Vermithor dwells unclaimed in a cave under Dragonstone. Here he is visited by Daemon, who wants to tame him and use him as an advantage in the fight against the Greens.
Although we have not seen much of Vermithor yet, he is the second oldest and largest dragon, and thus not to be underestimated.
- Fun fact: Author George R.R. Martin was inspired by Vermithrax Pejorative, a dragon from the movie The Dragon Slayer (1981), for Vermithor’s name.
Place 1: Vhagar
- Current rider: Aemond Targaryen
- Former riders: Visenya Targaryen, Baelon Targaryen, Laena Velaryon
No dragon in House of the Dragon can match Vhagar, the “Queen of all Dragons.” In the entire history of Westeros, there has only been one dragon larger than her: Balerion the “Black Dread.”
Vhagar’s first rider was none other than Visenya Targaryen, one of the two sister-wives of Aegon the Conqueror. Therefore, Vhagar played a crucial role in the conquest of Westeros and is extremely battle-tested.
In the first season, we mainly saw Vhagar as the dragon of Laena Velaryon, Daemon’s second wife. But after she passes away, Aemond takes control of the colossal creature. With Vhagar, he can effortlessly kill Lucerys and his dragon Arrax – albeit rather inadvertently.
- Fun fact: Vhagar’s design was inspired by aging reptiles, including turtles and alligators. This is especially reflected in the loose and leathery skin.

But not only the dragons can impress in House of the Dragon. The actors also manage to embody their characters convincingly. Some even a little too convincingly. One actor is so good in his role that he is hated in real life
