In the series The Boys , you get to know Homelander as a pretty nasty supe right from the first episode, who puts his ego above all else. However, things looked quite different during his first mission. It went terribly wrong, but he found a friend.
In The Boys, Homelander has been in the business for quite some time and in the first episode, you can already tell that he is the complete opposite of his idol, Superman. But it wasn’t always like that.
During his first mission, he actually tried to act like a hero. That didn’t last long, and his career could have ended, but luckily, he found a friend.
Caution: There are spoilers for The Boys Presents: Diabolical and season 3 of The Boys.
The Boys may be over, but a prequel is already set to release in 2027:
First days are hard
What happened during his first mission? In 2022, Prime Video released The Boys Presents: Diabolical. The animated series serves as a spin-off to The Boys and tells independent stories from the universe in 8 episodes. These are not part of the canon in the main series, so they officially never happened – except for episode 8 (source: Variety).
In the episode, Homelander makes his first public appearance for Vought. During this, he also embarks on his first mission. In a power plant, he is supposed to stop the kidnappers and free the hostages. With his powers, this shouldn’t be a problem, but he somehow can’t quite assess them.
He causes a weapon to explode with his heat vision, resulting in the death of a hostage. The criminals then label him a loser
and an ego is shattered. He kills a female kidnapper, and even the hostages begin to fear him. In a frenzy, he then killed all those involved.
This is actually a total PR disaster, but Homelander was lucky and had a good ally.
Homelander’s first friend
How did Homelander get out of this situation? After Homelander freaks out, he panics, especially after Black Noir shows up and sees everything. Homelander, who has been taught by Madelyn that Noir only wants to see him fail, angrily charges at him and tries to fight him.
Noir flees and evades him. Suddenly, Homelander sees a person who has been killed by Noir, and an explosion destroys the entire area. Black Noir was not there to take down Homelander; he helped him. He covered up his outburst, and Homelander solved the problem with an interview.
What was Homelander’s attitude towards Noir afterward? Looking at the interactions and roles of both, one notices that Black Noir has a completely different role than the other supes in the Seven. Noir not only takes care of Vought’s popularity externally, but he also carries out secret missions and eliminates problems.
Therefore, he is also useful to Homelander, as he doesn’t have to get his hands dirty. Plus, he cannot speak, so there is little risk of enraging Homelander.
In season 3, Homelander actually kills Black Noir after he learns that Noir knew about Homelander’s father. Unlike with his other victims, Homelander seems visibly affected here. Moreover, he talks to him about his feelings, and Homelander even explains that Noir is not the mysterious supe to him, as he is for the rest of the world.
However, his true feelings are likely shown when he is about to kill him: Homelander starts to cry and seems very affected by the fact that he has to kill Noir (source: Prime Video on YouTube). But, well, his ego is still more important to him than anything else.
