The new Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War features a strong co-op mode called “Zombies” for those who prefer to play together rather than against each other. During the Game Awards, the developers revealed what to expect for this mode.
What is the Zombie mode? As the name suggests, you fight against zombies in this mode with up to four players on a team. Together, you try to survive increasingly tougher waves and escape in the end.
You have access to familiar weapons from the base game, which you can upgrade with cool features like elemental ammo. Realism is not to be found in the Zombie mode.
After the new map for the Warzone was shown, Treyarch provides more information specifically about the Zombie mode. It will receive a lot of new content in the upcoming weeks.
Christmas Event and New Modes
Here are the new modes: The highlight of the new features is two new modes. The first is “Jingle Hells”, a Christmas event where the familiar map “The Machine” gets a more festive vibe. The event starts together with Season 1 of Cold War and Warzone on December 16.
On the map, snowmen will be scattered around, which are supposed to drop special loot. There are snowballs that can slow down or freeze opponents, and the plague hounds will get cute reindeer noses, antlers, and Christmas ornaments.
The second mode is “Cranked”, which currently lacks specific information, but is based on the same mode from Modern Warfare. This is likely to bring a bit more stress and action to Zombies.
In earlier CoD titles, “Cranked” was a mode where players constantly had to get kills. If they went too long without killing anyone, they would explode. If the mode comes back in a similar way, you should ration your zombies well.
What else is coming for the Zombie mode: In addition to the new modes, there will be more content that is partly derived from Season 1. Treyarch promises:
- Battle Pass weapons
- daily and seasonal challenges
- new calling cards
- support for Cruise Missiles
Additionally, a split-screen mode will be introduced. This is great news, especially for players who prefer couch co-op, although it may be difficult due to the current COVID situation.

Exclusive content for PlayStation: The PlayStation version of Cold War has an exclusive Zombie mode, Onslaught. It will receive two new maps as well as “Holiday Onslaught”. The content will be released at the start or during Season 1.
