Video games can surprise us with their stories and leave us open-mouthed with twists. In this list, we present you 5 prime examples that kept us occupied for longer.
How was the list created? There are many good stories in games. Some of them make use of a twist, meaning a turn at the end or sometimes even in the middle.
If a twist is well-prepared, it catches you off guard. Only upon replaying do you start to discover the small hints that the developers have sprinkled throughout.
In this list, we show you 5 games that have a surprising twist and therefore stay in your mind even after the credits roll. The order is purely random. Attention Spoiler: Of course, we reveal crucial turns in the stories of the discussed games here. A spoiler warning applies to: Bioshock, Spec Ops: The Line, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, A Way Out, and Heavy Rain.
Bioshock
The twist in Bioshock is prepared from the very beginning. Shortly after entering the underwater city of Rapture, we come into contact with Atlas, who from then on gives us instructions. Each of these starts with the phrase “Would you be so kind”.
About two-thirds of the way through the game, it is revealed that the protagonist Jack is the son of the entrepreneur and Rapture chief Andrew Ryan. More than that: Jack has been genetically manipulated and follows any command that begins with “Would you be so kind” without resistance.
The genius of the twist is that it not only works on a narrative level but also critically questions our actions as players. In games, we often blindly follow the instructions of NPCs or our quest log. Rarely do we question them. Bioshock points out that we rarely use our free will in games. Instead, we do what the developers want from us. By the way, a new game from Bioshock creator Ken Levine is supposed to be released soon.
