Warhammer Online: Return of Reckoning
Yes, Warhammer once had an MMORPG and in a perfect world, it would be bigger than World of Warcraft – but several mistakes caused it to eventually fail. The official servers have even been shut down now, but you can still play it.
For many years, fans have been privately running “Return of Reckoning,” a fan version of the original MMORPG, which is constantly receiving new updates and even new content.
In terms of gameplay, you can imagine a very old version of World of Warcraft, with two factions, different races, and classes – though these differ for each race. The game is played with tab-targetting and quests like in a theme park MMO.
The big peculiarity is the open PvP in certain zones, which is hardly noticeable: instead of NPCs, you just smack other players. This is simply part of the game and the world.
Don’t expect a huge player community with Warhammer Online. The servers might be populated by a few hundred players, many of whom are veterans or log in only occasionally. However, if you want to dive deep into Warhammer Fantasy and explore the world on your own, the game is worth a look and is completely free: If you miss the MMORPG of Warhammer, give Return of Reckoning a shot in 2025.
