Mieruko-chan

What is it about? Miko Yotsuya is an ordinary high school student – with one exception: She can see ghosts. But instead of panicking, she chooses to simply ignore the creepy apparitions. No matter how terrifying the creatures may be, Miko tries to act like nothing is happening, hoping they will just fade away.
As she desperately tries to continue her normal life, she gets pulled deeper into the supernatural. The ghosts do not disappear and often come disturbingly close, making it even more challenging to ignore them. Soon it becomes clear that her talent is not only a curse but perhaps also a gift.
What makes the anime so special? Mieruko-chan cleverly combines horror and comedy, creating a unique atmosphere. On one hand, there are genuinely spooky ghost appearances that do not have to hide behind classic horror anime, while on the other hand, Miko’s dry reactions and her desperate attempts to ignore the ghosts provide absurd and funny moments.
It is also interesting how relatable Miko’s reactions are – as viewers, we find ourselves feverishly trying to ignore the ghosts alongside her because they look so gross and repulsive. At the same time, the presence of good spirits creates an unexpectedly soothing effect that is incredibly relieving. This connection makes us empathize with Miko’s experiences and feel her emotions up close.
