In Helldivers 2, players have long been hoping for an update that implements a new weapon category: swords. Here’s where things stand with melee weapons and what the developers have to say about it.
What do the fans want? In Helldivers 2, fans can slam the gunstock of their weapon into the faces of democratic enemies with a button, but that’s still not enough for them. They want to possess more effective melee weapons in their arsenal, such as knives or swords.
For this reason, a Helldiver even set a goal to beat up enemies until the team behind Helldivers 2 implements new melee weapons. Weeks after the release, there are still no swords from Over-Earth, so fans have followed up in the developers’ Discord channel to ask about the status of these weapons.
Project is still marked as “plausible”
What do the developers say about the swords? In the Helldivers 2 Discord channel, the user “sanest creeker” wondered if the community manager “Twinbeard” knew what had happened to the idea of armor dyeing and melee weapons. This was considered an important topic in the community, but so far there has been no new feedback on the matter.
Twinbeard then replied: “What happened? Well, it was a month, not a year. It could still happen. As you know, we have been pretty busy last month. Melee weapons are still marked as ‘plausible’.” (via discord.com)
How far the team has progressed in the development of this new type of weapon is still unknown. It could also be that the idea is still in its infancy, as it is not known whether melee weapons were in planning before the great success of Helldivers 2 or if they have just been recently added.
Are swords possible? Even in Helldivers 1, an electric saber was advertised, but this sword did not make it into the final game. Thus, it is possible that the developers have already explored the idea of swords or chainsaws in the game beforehand.
It will now be shown whether such a weapon is worth it on the battlefield. Those playing on difficulties 7 – 9 will know how heavily they are overwhelmed by enemy troops. A sword would have to be very powerful to eliminate enemies with a single strike, but not so strong that players only run around with swords.
