Finally, the time had come! The Illuminated invaded Helldivers 2 to conquer the galaxy. But they faced fierce resistance from the Helldivers. And just like that: the threat was history.
There was great excitement among the Helldivers fans when the big update featuring the Illuminated was revealed during the Game Awards. Literally for months, players had been waiting for the invasion of the third enemy faction alongside bugs and robots.
On the weekend, it finally happened, and the space squids attacked. However, the long-planned invasion failed spectacularly. Helldivers 2 saw a significant increase in players, which the Illuminated seemingly could not cope with. Many battles were fought on the streets of the planet Calypso. The result: The new faction was completely defeated. Currently, they cannot be challenged in the game anymore.
Helldivers celebrate victory, but not everyone got to enjoy the new enemy
This is how players are reacting: Initial feedback on the new update has been largely positive on social media. The Illuminated, the new vehicles, the new combat environment – all of this excited many Helldivers.
And apparently, this also motivated them to play. After the victory against the new enemies, there is celebrating in the Helldivers 2 subreddit: “We won,” “A hundred years of preparation wasted,” or “Imagine declaring war after a hundred years, only to get beaten down in 2 days” – such remarks can be found from the players (via reddit).
At the same time, there are also comments from players who would have liked to participate. However, others dealt with the Illuminated so quickly that some completely missed the invasion. Anyone wanting to fight against the cool new enemies now will have to wait.
Is that it for the Illuminated? Currently, they are nowhere to be seen. But players are sure: They will return. This current invasion must have been just a vanguard, and the true battle is yet to come. After all, the Illuminated could only conquer (and then lose) a single planet before they were defeated. Surely, that can’t be all.
Accordingly, everyone is now eagerly awaiting the return of the new enemies. And then it will be clear whether the Helldivers can confront the Illuminated as effectively again – or if the battle will be a bit more prolonged this time.
