The players of Helldivers 2 are wondering if they created not a black hole, but a portal. A NASA audio recording could help.
What is it with the hole/portal? In Helldivers 2, a super colony of the Terminites has emerged on the planet Merida. The bugs overran Merida and threatened the freedom and democracy of the Over-Earth, which is why the order was given to completely destroy the planet.
Subsequently, the Helldivers were dispatched to deploy a substance called “dark fluid” in the planet’s crust. Once a certain level of dark fluid was reached, it destroyed Merida and left behind a dark, purple shimmering “object” in orbit instead of the planet.
In the reports from the commanders, it is stated to the Helldivers that this dark “object” is a black hole, but some players doubt that.
Players believe: Not a black hole, but a portal
What do the players believe? A large part of the Helldivers is naturally convinced that the Over-Earth is telling the truth and that it is indeed a black hole. Nevertheless, there are also some skeptics who suspect it could be some sort of portal or a wormhole through which the Illuminati come.
- Familiar_One_3297 via Reddit: “This is not a black hole … this is an Illuminate portal!”
- HinDae085 via Reddit: “The way it swirls. I believe we just created a wormhole. Not a black hole.”
- Morning_Poppins_Yo via Reddit: “We just shot a planet full of bugs through a wormhole in the direction of space squids, which are known for their hit-and-run tactic […]. Basically, we gave the Illuminati a way back into the galaxy and added a bug-infested planet to their centuries-old grudge.”
However, other players also believe that this is not a portal for the Illuminati but rather establishes a connection to the dwarves from Deep Rock Galactic. There have long been rumors about a collaboration between Helldivers and Deep Rock.
NASA releases audio recording of black hole
What role does NASA play? There exists an audio recording by NASA on YouTube that shows what a black hole “sounds like”. Astronomers discovered years ago that the pressure waves emitted by the black hole create what are known as ripples in the hot gas of the galaxy cluster. These ripples can in turn be converted into tones.
The audio recording heard on YouTube is called a sonification, where data has been converted into sounds – in this case, astronomical data. To ensure that the human ear can perceive the sounds, the signals are “heard 144 trillion or 288 trillion times higher than their original frequency.”
This NASA states additionally:
The widespread misconception that there is no sound in space is rooted in the fact that most of space is essentially a vacuum that does not provide a medium for the propagation of sound waves. A galaxy cluster, however, has large amounts of gas that envelop hundreds or even thousands of galaxies, providing a medium for sound wave propagation.

What does this have to do with Helldivers? Some players on Reddit compared the NASA audio recording with the sounds that can be heard when you fly to the black hole (the former location of Merida) in Helldivers 2.
Since the sound in Helldivers 2 and the NASA audio recording sound at least somewhat similar, that could be an indication that it is indeed a black hole. Whether we are seeing a portal through which the Illuminati come will be revealed in the future.
The Illuminati are a hostile alien faction from Helldivers 1. Players have been expecting the arrival of the Illuminati for months, and we will receive a new, third enemy faction in Helldivers 2.
