The Lich King will be the final boss in “Knights of the Frozen Throne” in Hearthstone. He has extremely powerful abilities – and a damn cool reward!
The upcoming expansion Knights of the Frozen Throne for Blizzard’s card game Hearthstone will be different from previous card addons. In addition to more than 100 new cards, there are free story missions for all players, where they can storm the Icecrown Citadel and defeat the bosses that lure with card packs. The final boss, the Lich King Arthas, will be particularly tough, but he has a special reward ready, as revealed in a video by the developers.
Arthas: You have to go through over 9 Lich Kings…
The special reward of the expansion will be an alternative Paladin hero – the young Arthas Menethil, before he became the Lich King.
To unlock him, you have to defeat the Lich King a total of 9 times, namely with every class in the game. According to the developers, “the Lich King doesn’t cheat, but he uses alternative rules”.
Depending on the class you challenge him with, he uses a particularly nasty strategy and has other abilities. A few examples were also mentioned:
- The health points of mages are already set to 1 HP on the first turn – he has a special grudge against Jaina.
- In paladins, Arthas sees himself, and that fuels his hatred. They are assigned particularly tough opponents.
The fight against the Lich King Arthas is said to be one of the hardest of all Hearthstone expansions. No wonder, the Lich King gets every minion on his side that he destroys.
In designing the Lich King Arthas, the developers first came up with jokes – but that made the Lich King silly. A trait that simply didn’t fit Blizzard’s most famous villain. Therefore, they decided to take a different route. The Lich King Arthas remains dark – but he’s just damn good at Hearthstone.
You can also tell from his quotes, which reference the lore and are incredibly fitting:
“You play cards like my father ruled his kingdom. Weakly.”
