Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff, and Slytherin – these are the four Hogwarts houses in Harry Potter. As different as they are, all produced great witches and wizards. In this list, we dedicate ourselves to the house of Slytherin and embark on a search for the most powerful witches and wizards of this house.
What does Slytherin stand for? Witches and wizards from the house of Slytherin usually possess traits such as ambition, resourcefulness, cunning, determination, and pride. More info in the profile:
- House colors: Silver and Green
- Animal: Snake
- House ghost: The Bloody Baron
- Common room: In the dungeons
Slytherin is also known for having produced particularly many dark wizards. But of course, not all Slytherins are automatically evil, as we will see later in the list. In the song of the Sorting Hat, it says:
In Slytherin, the skill of cunning is well combined,
but here you will also find true friends.

Attention Spoiler: To explain the ranking, various events from “Harry Potter” and “Fantastic Beasts” will be spoiled.
Rank 10: Phineas Nigellus Black
Phineas Nigellus Black was the headmaster of Hogwarts from 1847 to 1925. Especially players of Hogwarts Legacy are likely to know him, as he is currently in office there. In the books, he appears as a talking portrait that accompanies Harry, Ron, and Hermione in the last part and provides them with important information.
However, he did not perform his job at Hogwarts very well. In fact, the arrogant and condescending Phineas Nigellus Black could not stand youth at all. Thus, he goes down in history as the most unpopular headmaster of all time.
Nevertheless, he somehow managed to get the honorable position of headmaster. Thus, he just makes it into this ranking – even if only as the last place, which he surely would not like.
Rank 9: Regulus Arcturus Black
Sirius’s younger brother, Regulus, is already the second member of the venerable Black family on this list. The Blacks were known primarily for their obsession with their “pure-blood status”.
Regulus upheld his family’s reputation and immediately joined Lord Voldemort after his schooling. He served as a Death Eater for nearly a year. But then he realized Voldemort’s plan to attain immortality through Horcruxes.
Disturbed by this discovery, he set out to destroy the Horcrux locket. While he did not survive this mission, his knowledge of dark magic and his courage to resist Voldemort is remarkable. Even though not much else is known about Regulus, he earns a place on this list at number nine.
Rank 8: Horace Slughorn
The potions teacher Horace Slughorn is not only a master of his field – he was also the head of Slytherin House twice. He also has the gift of flattery and built a network of successful and famous wizards.
Even though he deeply abhors the dark arts, he is well-versed in this area. He was the one who educated Tom Riddle (later Voldemort) about Horcruxes.
Even though Slughorn initially seems inconspicuous, he is a wizard one should not take lightly. This secures him the eighth place in this ranking.
Rank 7: Leta Lestrange
The Lestranges are also an old, “pure-blood” family. Many might initially think of someone else when they hear the name. But in the prequel series “Fantastic Beasts”, we get to know Leta Lestrange a bit better.
During her time at Hogwarts, she had very few friends apart from Newt. However, what she had in abundance was magical talent. Albus Dumbledore himself described her as “one of the cleverest students he ever had”.
In the fight against Gellert Grindelwald, she was also a powerful ally. She managed to help Newt and his allies escape, even at the cost of her own life.
Leta was not only talented, but also brave and has thus rightfully earned the seventh place.
