In the fantasy MMORPG Guild Wars 2 intends to take a harder stance against so-called RMT (Real Money Traders). And not only will they focus on the offering, but also on the demand.
In two forum posts, GW2’s Game Security Lead, Chris Cleary, explained the new policy in contrast to the old one. Since the release, they have remained relaxed towards gold buyers. These are players who buy in-game currency gold from “private individuals” for real money. This relaxed attitude will change from now on.
Gold sellers are often responsible for hacks, identity theft, and fraud. Those who buy from them must expect that their gold will be confiscated. Repeat offenders will be banned for a certain period of time or even permanently.
Guild Wars 2 aims to catch the loyal customers
So far, they have distinguished between gold sellers and gold buyers and will continue to do so to some extent. This is due to the basic attitude of the two groups. Gold sellers are indifferent to the game; they only want to make a profit and often employ methods that directly harm others. On the other hand, gold buyers want to play Guild Wars 2. Therefore, they will not punish both groups “equally harshly.”
However, they have now decided on a tougher approach, as Guild Wars 2 has been on the market for three years and some gold buyers have become loyal customers of the gold sellers. They want to break this connection once and for all.
