With Cayo Perico, GTA Online received a large island in December 2020. MeinMMO explains how to get there.
What is this new island in GTA 5 Online? The island is called Cayo Perico and belongs to the drug lord El Rubio. It is located south of the coast of San Andreas, the world of GTA 5 and GTA Online. It was added on December 15, 2020, as part of a DLC, the Cayo Perico Heist Update.
Cayo Perico is a tropical island that exudes the charm of Central and South America. Palm trees, beaches, and nice weather give the impression of an idyll. However, the idyll is marred by barriers, barbed wire fences, and armed patrols.
Because El Rubio does not want unauthorized persons moving around the island. In this case, that means the players. But how do you get to Cayo Perico and what can you do there?
You need to buy a submarine
How do you get to the new island? Cayo Perico is not part of the open game world of GTA Online. It can only be accessed through the heist of the same name. This is the first heist in GTA Online that you can also complete solo.
Here’s how to get there:
- Go to the back of the casino. There you will find a club.
- There you need to talk to the NPC Miguel Madrazo.
- This will activate the starting mission for the Cayo Perico Heist.
- To start the heist, you now need to buy the Kosatka submarine. It will cost you 2.2 million dollars.
- Once you have bought the submarine, you need to go to the interaction menu (M key on PC, touchpad on PS4/PS5, and options button on Xbox).
- In the menu, you need to request the Kosatka under Services.
- Your submarine should now appear on the map; you need to head there.
- When you arrive at the marked location, the submarine will surface in front of you. So don’t be surprised if you can’t see it right away.
- A cutscene will now be triggered in the submarine.
- After that, you just need to go to the airport in Los Santos and you can start the heist.

It’s worth playing the Cayo Perico Heist
Why is it worth it? The Cayo Perico Heist is the most lucrative heist in GTA Online. Upon successful completion, you can earn up to 4.5 million dollars. However, this depends on which objectives you complete.
Before you can start the actual heist, you first need to complete some tasks to scout the island.
