Millions of gamers are looking forward to playing GTA 6. However, a former GTA developer believes that you will initially have to settle for 30 FPS.
Who is this former developer? Former GTA developer Mike York was a guest on the podcast Kiwi Talkz. During the podcast, York shared his assessment of whether Rockstar Games aims for 30 or 60 FPS for GTA 6.
- The FPS describe your frame rate, meaning the number of frames displayed in one second. At 30 FPS, that’s 30 frames per second.
York worked for Rockstar Games as an animator from 2012 to 2017, contributing to Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption 2. Currently, York is working for Highwire Games on the tactical shooter Six Days in Fallujah.
Kiwi Talks has taken the podcast episode with York offline at the request of the animator (via X.com).
GTA 6 at release only at 30 FPS?
What does York say about GTA 6? York expects that GTA 6 will only run at 30 FPS upon release on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. The English-language online magazine GamesRadar quotes York: “I don’t know if they will be able to achieve 60 FPS. Then York continued:
I think they will aim for 30 FPS – and locked 30 FPS, which means it will never drop below that. They will try to optimize as much as possible to ensure it never drops below 30. But it could be cranked up to 40, 41, 52, whatever, and I bet that later, when it’s on PC, it will probably be super optimized and changed, and new graphics cards will come out, and you’ll likely be able to run it at 60 FPS.
If York is correct, the highly anticipated action game will not achieve 60 FPS at its console release. When and whether GTA 6 will be released on PC is currently uncertain. When on December 5, 2023 the first trailer for GTA 6 was released, the PC version was not mentioned at all (via take2games.com). A release of GTA 6 for PC is not ruled out; however, based on experience, the game may come out for PC with some delay.
Whether GTA 6 can meet the announced release date for 2025 is currently uncertain. Many experts and analysts suspect that Rockstar Games may postpone the launch. A well-known industry insider with contacts to Rockstar Games also doubts a release this year: GTA 6: Insider is sure the release will be postponed
