One of the most popular interface modifications of World of Warcraft has survived the “fight against addons” – ElvUI has received a new version.
With World of Warcraft Midnight and the associated pre-patch, a new era in Blizzard’s MMORPG has begun. For many, this meant a big adjustment, as numerous addons have ceased their services or their functionality has been severely restricted by Blizzard. ElvUI also seemed doomed at first – but now there is good news. An initial version of ElvUI for Midnight is finished and can be used, the addon lives on.
ElvUI just before extinction – now there is a new version
What is ElvUI? ElvUI is one of the most well-known and largest interface modifications for World of Warcraft. Basically, it is a base package that can be equipped with many extensions to adapt most of the user interface to your own wishes. For instance, it is possible to make the WoW interface look exactly like that of Diablo or Guild Wars – among other useful tweaks.
For many years, ElvUI was a staple of the gameplay experience in World of Warcraft for many players – switching to the “standard UI” can be quite tough and unfamiliar for some. Therefore, some are eagerly hoping that the addon returns – and now that is the case.
Why is ElvUI still around? Although ElvUI announced back then that it probably would not exist in Midnight, there is now a new version. This is primarily because Blizzard was extremely restrictive at the beginning of the Midnight beta. A large part of addon functionalities was cut – not just those that directly affected combat. Similar to WeakAuras, the creators of ElvUI announced back then: If it comes to this, we probably won’t exist anymore.
Over the weeks, Blizzard has lifted many restrictions and discussed with the addon authors which functions can be reopened.
If you want to download ElvUI, you can do so on the website tukui.org.
However, note that ElvUI no longer supports all features and this is a first version for Midnight that surely still has some bugs that need to be fixed.
Some even feel that Blizzard has relaxed the addon restrictions too much, because some “advantages” in combat are now possible again …
