Kevin “Papaplatte” Teller is one of the larger German streamers on Twitch, but with a special event, he managed to break into the international Top 10 in July 2023. Now he reflects on his record stream.
What was the event about? From July 20 to July 25, the third edition of the Reddit event r/place took place. This is an interactive canvas where users can place colorful pixels to create art together.
You can find all the information about the event here:
The German Twitch streamer Kevin “Papaplatte” Teller was also part of this year’s r/place and took over the canvas completely. In a video, he summarizes how he could win the big pixel war.
Even Félix “xQc” Lengyel, who was long the absolute number 1 on Twitch, fought for his place on the canvas.
Old friends and new enemies in the pixel war
How did Papaplatte perform in r/place? On the first day of his participation, the Twitch streamer went into it a bit aimlessly. Here he incited the French against his Twitch colleague Rumathra, there he pixelated the iconic red-and-white “Döner Kebab” logo – was that the Polish flag? Oops.
When Papaplatte took over the Indian flag, the strength of his community already showed: In no time, they created a white space that the Twitch streamer could fill as he pleased. Hardly had he decided on the logo of the children’s show “Toggo,” when his viewers started pixeling away.
Then, Papaplatte started a small feud with Turkey, as they had attacked a memorial for the deceased YouTuber Technoblade with their flag. Satisfied with his daily performance, the Twitch streamer ended the day, only to find out the next morning that his artworks had been erased overnight.
How he changed his strategy: The 26-year-old began to proceed more thoughtfully: He formed alliances and teamed up with other communities, but also recognized when he had to give in. In addition, the Twitch streamer acted cleverly and got his opponents to attack other works instead of his own.
With his actions, Papaplatte attracted international attention, as he allied with the American streamer Mizkif against the “My Little Pony” faction or teamed up with the Spanish streamer Rubius after initially attacking him.
We have already reported on a special highlight here at MeinMMO: Papaplatte ultimately managed to prevail against xQc, one of the biggest streamers worldwide. The former Overwatch pro had to admit his defeat and conceded.
The Twitch streamer ended the event with a mean farewell greeting to the head of Reddit.

The “German xQc” beats the original
How the event affected the streamer: Papaplatte was able to achieve absolute record numbers with r/place: With over 120,000 concurrent viewers and more than 35,000 subscribers, he reached a new personal best (via TwitchTracker).
How many viewers were only there to complain about the streamer after he attacked the artwork of their community remains to be seen.
In Germany, the pixel war temporarily secured Papaplatte the number 1 spot as the most-watched streamer, while internationally he landed in 4th place.
The event had such a significant impact that the streamer ranked 9th for the month of July 2023 overall. In comparison: Last month, Papaplatte was still in 33rd place (via sullygnome). For Papaplatte, this was something special.
Especially impressive: Papaplatte is considered by some to be “the German xQc.” The original only ranked 15th in July. However, he also streamed less on Twitch, as he is splitting his time between the two platforms since his million-dollar deal with the competing platform Kick.
In his video, Papaplatte thanks everyone who supported him and pixelated diligently: It was a wonderful weekend and his most successful stream ever.
And even the video about his success became a success: Because the Twitch streamer landed 4th in the YouTube Trends.
In the past, Papaplatte had already shown that he has a solid community, and in addition, he is capable of sudden growth. You can read here how he made the jump into the top 10 in 2021:
