The MMORPG Tibia was created in 1995 in Regensburg, but experienced its best business year 25 years later. Since the outbreak of the pandemic, record numbers have been achieved – even in 2022, the success streak continued, allowing the employees to look forward to a hefty bonus.
What is special about the MMORPG?
- Tibia was created in 1995 when four university students in Regensburg came together and invented what we now know as MMORPG. Back then, it was uncharted territory, there was no template, they only knew that a team from the USA was somehow planning something similar with “Ultima Online”.
- One of the unique features of the MMORPG is that the students founded a company in Regensburg, CipSoft. To this day, they are the managing directors of the company, which now consists of almost 100 people.
- Tibia is primarily played today in South America and Poland and continues to generate exciting stories in 2023, which we report on at MeinMMO.
How are business operations going? The business has been excellent since 2020. The lockdown surely played a role in that. However, in 2022, when measures generally eased, the revenue remained strong.

How does Tibia make so much money? Tibia is a freemium game. You can play it for free or get a premium account, which brings benefits. Additionally, there is the premium currency “Tibia Coins.”
It is even possible in Tibia to sell your character through a bazaar. CipSoft takes a share of the transaction amount.
The company distributes 25% of the profits to the employees
How do the employees benefit from it? This is another unique feature of the company from Regensburg. As managing director Stephan Vogel explains, the company distributes a quarter of the company’s profits to the employees each year in the form of a bonus.
This year, the bonuses correspond to more than 9 additional monthly salaries.
This will not only delight the employees but also the city treasury of Regensburg.
