Through sales of a special item package in the German MMORPG Albion Online, nearly 43,000 euros were raised: money that the developers will donate to the COVID Solidarity Fund.
What action took place in the game? The corona crisis is gripping the entire world and the World Health Organization (WHO) is trying to coordinate activities to win the fight against the virus and the COVID-19 disease on many fronts. However, the WHO needs donations. These are collected through the COVID Solidarity Fund.
Therefore, the German development studio Sandbox Interactive decided to participate in this action. They sold the “Staff of Hermes” package in the MMORPG Albion Online. This includes:
- the Staff of Hermes, a prestige costume for the off-hand
- a matching avatar ring for the Staff of Hermes
A fantastic action
How much of the revenue was donated? A total of 42,644.94 euros was raised through the sale, of which 100% will be donated to the COVID Solidarity Fund. Albion Online not only has a very active community thanks to the Free2Play release, whose player numbers have been rising sharply recently.
What do the developers think about it? The team released this statement:

What will happen to the money now? The funds in the COVID Solidarity Fund will be used for activities under the “Strategic Preparedness and Response” plan. These include among others:
- Initiation of activities to track and understand the spread of the virus
- Ensuring that patients receive the care they need
- Purchase and distribution of essential supplies such as masks, gloves, and protective clothing for frontline workers
- Development of evidence-based guidelines and advice, as well as ensuring that health personnel and emergency workers receive the information and training needed to recognize and treat affected patients
- Creation of guidelines for the general public and specific groups to develop measures to prevent the spread and protect themselves and others
- Acceleration of efforts to develop vaccines, tests, and treatments
