The 2nd season of House of the Dragon is in full swing and, as the name suggests, it also involves dragons that are used by various actors to conquer and fight. In The Winds of Winter, George R.R. Martin aims to explore the relationship between dragons and riders in more detail.
In his own blog, George R.R. Martin talks about the latest episode of House of the Dragon and in general about how dragons, and specifically his dragons, are written. In the post, he explains how he approaches his dragons.
He describes in detail how he designed his dragons. He wanted two instead of four legs. They need food, water, air, and dragons from Westeros are hunters. He explains that the dragons hunt their food and they have specific territories and places where they would live freely.
He also wants to further explore the relationship with humans in the future.

More information is to come in the next novel. In the blog post, he explains that there were 40 families that rode dragons before the story in House of the Dragon. However, these were not in Westeros, only those we know from the Targaryens.
George R.R. Martin intends to explain more about the relationship in his next two novels:
They form a bond with men… with certain men… and the why and how and how it came to be will eventually be further explained in THE WINDS OF WINTER and A DREAM OF SPRING and partly in BLOOD & FIRE.
He already explains here that dragons can be trained like bears, wolves, and lions, but they are never fully tamed. Dragons have their own personality and reflect the personality of their rider. They adapt to each other. This relationship, which has already been shown in Game of Thrones, is something Martin intends to further develop in the next two books.

When will the next book be released? However, fans will have to wait a bit longer for the two books, as in an update, the author revealed that The Winds of Winter is not yet finished. This means that one can expect to wait even longer. For A Dream of Spring, correspondingly even longer. The last volume of A Song of Ice and Fire was released in 2011. House of the Dragon draws its inspiration from a real historical war: The war that inspired “House of the Dragon” had no dragons, but everything else is suspiciously similar.
