Who are they anyway? Innosilicon is a semiconductor manufacturer based in China, known for producing cryptocurrency mining equipment.
In the world of cryptocurrencies, the company is primarily known for its LTC and BTC miners. Innosilicon was founded in 2006 and produces over 30 million chips per year.
Until now, Innosilicon did not have proper graphics cards for gamers in its portfolio. The newly presented “Fantasy” graphics cards are therefore the manufacturer’s first gaming products.
The manufacturer’s big announcement seems confident and clearly shows that it is not just an “attempt” to gain a foothold in the gaming sector. Because Innosilicon had already stated that it intends to present more graphics cards in 2022 (via videocardz.com).
The new graphics card is said to be slightly faster than the PS4 Pro
What performance does the new graphics card offer? The graphics card is said to deliver a performance of 5 TeraFlops. That would be slightly faster than the PS4 Pro, which is supposed to deliver 4.2 TeraFlops of performance.
The GPU is also expected to provide a computing power of up to 160 Gpixels/s and is equipped with DisplayPort 1.4, HDMI 2.1, and VGA.
The graphics card is expected to come with a maximum of 16 GB GDDR6(X) memory. However, since the graphics card only operates with a 128-bit interface, this may limit the bandwidth of the memory.
Especially the decision to use GDDR6(X) memory is surprising, as Nvidia had previously held exclusive rights to the fastest video memory, using it in the GeForce RTX 3080. Therefore, the fastest memory was not included in AMD graphics cards either.
How fast is the graphics card supposed to be? You shouldn’t expect too much. The manufacturer names 4.2 TeraFlops of performance, which is significantly less compared to the current generation. In comparison, the GeForce RTX 3060, Nvidia’s weakest graphics card, already delivers about 13 TeraFlops.
The graphics card from Innosilicon is better comparable to the older AMD generation RX 400 and RX 500. The Radeon RX 570 delivers up to 5.1 TeraFlops of computing power on paper. This may make the graphics card less appealing to gamers who are hoping for a sensible upgrade option.
Price and release of the new graphics card not yet known
How much will the graphics card cost? So far, no prices for the graphics card are known. However, it can be assumed that the prices will be below that of a GeForce RTX 3060, as it is expected to deliver significantly less performance on paper. But these are assumptions since we currently know nothing about the prices or the actual performance.
Not only from China does AMD and NVidia face competition in the graphics card market. Intel has also announced that it wants to finally make a mark in the market with graphics cards. In the coming year 2022, several graphics cards are expected to arrive that could be worth it – if the prices are right.
