The German company Gameforge is leaving the mobile games market. This costs the company many employees who are now left without a job.
The German publisher Gameforge has announced that it will lay off nearly a fifth of its workforce to reposition itself. Of the 450 employees, about 90 will have to leave. In the future, the focus will be primarily on publishing PC titles.
Alexander Rösner, the CEO and founder of Gameforge, explains this step as follows:
“In the PC market, especially for free-to-play,” interesting opportunities have arisen in recent years, while the mobile games market has become much harder and less flexible. We have been less successful than expected, and now we are drawing the consequences by repositioning ourselves in all areas.”
Moreover, they regret having to let so many employees go, but this is only a logical step to make the operation more future-proof. The affected employees will receive comprehensive support and assistance in finding a new job.
Gameforge is responsible for titles such as TERA, Aion, and Orcs Must Die Unchained in Germany.
Cortyn says: Mobile gaming is considered by many companies to be the growth market par excellence, and for many players, it is the future of gaming. It is therefore surprising that a relatively large publisher is throwing in the towel and stating that the mobile market is too difficult to yield long-term profits. Perhaps Gameforge is just a one-off case, or perhaps it is a forerunner. What do you think? Is mobile gaming the future, or is this phenomenon already heading towards its predetermined end because it cannot meet the needs of many core gamers?
