Fortnite enhances graphics on PC. Those who own one of Nvidia’s top graphics cards will experience this starting from September 17, 2020. Raytracing provides more beautiful lights and shadows.
What’s happening in Fortnite? A graphics update is coming for Fortnite, but it is only aimed at certain players and not everyone.
On September 17, Nvidia will release a series of graphics improvements that focus mainly on real-time raytracing.
The technology behind it is essentially an algorithm that can track the path of light. This makes it possible to represent how light interacts with digital objects.
Raytracing is already being used in many new games.
Real-time raytracing is one of the most important features of Nvidia’s new RTX cards and also the upcoming new graphics cards from AMD.
Raytracing in Fortnite – What does it look like?
How does this affect Fortnite? New features include “ray traced reflections”. So when you look at a reflective glass, you should be able to see what’s happening behind you. In addition, shadows and light effects are supposed to be represented much more realistically and in greater detail in the game.
The RTX upgrade will ensure that the Fortnite world appears in a “better environment” in 3 different categories. These categories are:
- Shadows (small and large objects cast more natural shadows)
- Reflection (objects like windows show real reflections and not pre-rendered images)
- Lighting (provides natural lighting for the times of day, even when these change during a match)
Fortnite will support Nvidia’s “DLSS 2.0” feature. This increases the FPS while raytracing effects are active.
In this YouTube video from Nvidia GeForce, you can already get an impression of the special reflections that will await you in Fortnite with the feature.
Special map for testing: Nvidia created a custom map called RTX Treasure Run. The map was created with members of Fortnite’s creative community. You embark on a treasure hunt on the map and experience through effects and environments the many new impressions that raytracing is supposed to bring you.
How can you use it? To see the new effects in the game, you need to have a compatible graphics card installed in your system. It must support real-time raytracing. This includes Nvidia graphics cards of the “RTX” type, from GeForce 2060 to GeForce 2080 Ti.
If you want to upgrade your computer in the future, like with an RTX 3080, it will also support the better graphics. All previously announced graphics cards of the 3000 series, the 3070, 3080, and 3090, utilize this improved graphics.
Recently, another option was introduced to make Fortnite more beautiful. But shortly after, serious problems occurred. Because Fortnite suddenly became uglier than planned for PS4 players. Thus, Epic Games had to remove the new feature after just four days.
