The Chinese studio Rampage Games has released a new trailer for the upcoming free-to-play title Genesis. The game, made with Unreal Engine 4, actually looks quite good. But it seems to come a bit too late.
What kind of game is this? Genesis will be a free-to-play MOBA for the PS4. It takes place in a science fiction setting and already previews 27 different playable characters.
The gameplay is classic: In a 5-vs-5 match, players face off against each other, push the fight along various paths (lanes), and try to destroy the enemy’s main building.
As a MOBA, it seems to be arriving a few years too late. The genre had its hype long ago – before Battle Royale games. Already at the beginning of the year, when Genesis was announced, doubts arose about whether the game would be successful.
What are MOBAs? Multiplayer Online Battle Arenas, or MOBAs, are a genre that has emerged from strategy games. The first MOBA, Defense of the Ancients (DOTA), was a mod for Warcraft 3.
Since then, more and more MOBAs have emerged. The most popular and well-known ones are likely League of Legends, SMITE, and DOTA2. They still manage to attract large numbers on Twitch and at tournaments.
The genre itself has already passed its peak, as can be seen from Blizzard’s attempt with Heroes of the Storm. There has also been no major breakthrough on consoles. Here, Paragon tried, before it failed as well.
When is Genesis releasing? Genesis is set to release as a free game for the PS4 in mid-August. On the official website, you can already sign up for upcoming info and snag a small bonus for the game.
What Genesis Offers
These features the game offers: We don’t know much about Genesis yet – except what it looks like. The Unreal Engine 4 does a good job here and presents a MOBA with quite impressive graphics.
Otherwise, the game feels like a classic representative of its kind. There are multiple lanes, minions, and a jungle. However, Genesis does offer some pretty cool characters who promise amusing scenes:
- Skelter, a laser fox that somewhat resembles Rocket Raccoon
- Jones, a space pirate with an octopus face (Hello, Davy!)
- Sion, a salamander in a power suit – looks like Earthworm Jim
- Chris, a small, fat nerd with biochemical weapons
The characters will be leveled up over 16 levels, skilled, and equipped with items. The controls are said to be “tailored for consoles.” We are curious to see how the game will develop.
How well do you actually know your PS4?
