Trove
Developer: Gamigo | Setting: Fantasy Block World | Release date: June 9, 2015 | Platform: Playstation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, PC
What kind of game is this? Trove is an MMORPG in a voxel world that doesn’t take itself too seriously. It is a mix of dungeon crawler, MMORPG, and Minecraft – but nothing of it is done particularly well.
The MMORPG offers various classes, including the Boomeranger, Pirate Captain, or the Candy Barbarian. You can equip these characters and learn new abilities with them. Dragons, hoverboards, wings, and ships bring variety to gaming life.
You explore an open world where you can build in some places, like in Minecraft. Crafting is also possible.
In the endgame of Trove, there are dungeons that you can complete together with other players.
The developers keep the MMORPG updated regularly, although not as frequently as a few years ago, the last update was released in October 2023 (via trionworlds.com).
EVE Online
Developer: CCP Games | Setting: Sci-Fi | Release date: May 6, 2003 | Platform: PC
What kind of game is this? The space MMORPG EVE Online has been on the market since 2003 and has held its ground ever since. It is a sandbox game in space that gives its players practically all the freedoms.
One of the biggest features of the game are the ships that players can build and customize or buy. They can decide if they want to pilot a nimble small fighter, a large freighter, or a massive battleship.
Ideally, you are part of a guild; otherwise, one quickly gets stuck in EVE Online. The whole game, including politics, economy, religion, wars, and territories, is controlled by players.
Jokingly, people often refer to it as “spreadsheets in space,” which the developers have now made a reality. In-game data can now be transferred directly to Excel. The MMORPG receives about 3 major updates a year and is thus continuously expanded with new features.
Since the last Havoc expansion, you can even officially play for the bad guys.
