In Fortnite: Battle Royale a dream has come true for many fans. Because with Black Widow, for the first time a real Marvel skin is available in the shop. Fans have been waiting for this for a year.
What does the Black Widow offer look like? Since Update 8.50, Black Widow is the first Marvel skin available in the Fortnite shop. There are a total of 3 items:
- Black Widow Skin: An outfit showing the famous Avengers heroine Natalia “Black Widow” Romanova. It costs 1,500 V-Bucks (15 euros)
- Black Widow’s Combat Stick: A pickaxe shaped like Black Widow’s combat stick. Costs 800 V-Bucks (8 euros).
- Black Widow’s Pirouette: An emote that performs a complex kick choreography. Costs 200 V-Bucks (2 euros).
The three items are available in-game for an indefinite time and likely will only return during future Marvel crossovers. Additionally, a second Avengers set has been announced for early next week.
Fans have waited 1 year
Why is the Black Widow skin so sought after? On Reddit and others, fans are going crazy. Because over a year ago, when the first Infinity War movie came out in 2018 and Epic surprisingly brought the Thanos mode, fans hoped for matching Marvel skins, including Black Widow.
But Epic only brought Thanos, and the mode disappeared without leaving lasting marks in the form of skins. The superhero theme from Season 4 also did not bring any “real” Avengers skins, but various outfits that looked quite similar to Marvel heroes. Among them Omega, who resembled Ultron or Carbide, who looked like Iron Man.
Previously, the Rust Lord from Season 3 was often associated with Star Lord from Guardians of the Galaxy. It seemed that Epic might not have been able to obtain the necessary licenses to bring in the real heroes.
Now Epic seems to have enough influence (and certainly money) to get the real Avengers. Since Black Widow is one of the most popular Avengers and the skin is likely to be extremely rare, many fans according to Reddit are currently throwing their money at the skin.
- “I am so happy I was wrong!” (Many fans no longer expected real Avengers skins)
- “Damn, I have no money!”
- “Just spent 50 bucks on V-Bucks. I love this game!”
- “Hopefully, this is the only Avengers skin, for my wallet’s sake!”
- “Oh my god, we are really getting Avengers skins?!?!?!”
What else could come? Since Black Widow is only one of two announced Avenger sets, fans are currently speculating. Black Widow is a female character, so the second one is likely to be a male hero.
Therefore, many are currently expecting Iron Man, Hawkeye, or Thor. Hawkeye would be quite likely as a counterpart to Black Widow. On the other hand, many fans wish for Thor’s axe Stormbreaker as a harvesting tool and that would fit with a Thor set.
Some fans would also be happy about Captain Marvel, the new heroine in the Marvel universe, even if that would then be two female skins in a row.
Is there more to come? An interesting detail is that the skins do not have a regular rarity, but are only called “Marvel”. A hint that Epic may take on more official characters from pop culture franchises in the future? The start of Episode IX of Star Wars at the end of 2019 would be interesting in this case…
