Update from February 14, 2022: We have revised the list and added some new videos and information. Back 4 Blood has been removed, instead we have added Dying Light 2, which was released in 2022, as a new recommendation. Additionally, we have replaced CoD: Vanguard with the new Modern Warfare 2.
What kind of games are these? Many MMOs and multiplayer games try to appeal to a broad audience. This often also means targeting a younger audience. And for that, some content has to be cut, otherwise it risks a too high age rating.
Shooters are traditionally the genre that makes the least concessions in this regard. Because they are usually only available rated 18 anyway. Here we present a range of games that are purely aimed at adults – with shooters making up a larger share.
How did we choose? The list consists of personal recommendations from the editors and authors of MeinMMO. However, we made sure to only present multiplayer games and MMOs.
We also focused on how active the community still is in the respective games and when they were released. We primarily present newer games and those you can easily play with strangers when no friends are available.
Moreover, we tried to recommend at least a little genre mix, not just shooters. In the end, you will also find some noteworthy single-player titles as well as a look at the games rated 18 that will still be released in 2023.
GTFO

As prisoners, you are sent to an abandoned research complex to retrieve important data. Sounds easy? It would be, if there weren’t strange aliens in masses who will joyfully tear you apart if you disturb their sleep.
GTFO is a hardcore co-op shooter that is strongly oriented to the gameplay of the Payday games or Left4Dead. You play in a group of 4 prisoners – with other players or AI – and need a lot of coordination to sneak through the dark levels.
With various gadgets and weapons, you fulfill different roles, plan your “heist,” and you will often bite the dust. But every death toughens you up and you learn from it for the next attempt.
GTFO was a huge success on Steam right after its release from Early Access a huge success on Steam. From our experience, we can say: the game is worth it, but bring at least 2 friends, otherwise the game is nearly impossible.
Dying Light 2

Dying Light 2 combines unique parkour gameplay with survival and RPG elements with a relatively well-known horror story: A virus has wiped out almost all of humanity and turned them into zombies. Only a few oases of human life still exist.
You play Aiden, a “pilgrim” who delivers messages and goods between the cities. However, you have been infected yourself and now fight against the virus defeating you – while you actually need time to search for your sister.
Dying Light 2 is one of the most anticipated games on Steam – What makes it so special?
Alone or in co-op with up to 4 players, you play the campaign, complete missions and earn reputation with the various factions in the city Villedor. Your decisions influence how the city develops and looks.
Especially dangerous it becomes at night. There the zombies come out of their hideouts and particularly strong opponents appear. However, the night also allows you to explore new areas.
On your travels, you collect new equipment and level up, which allows you to learn new abilities that improve you in combat or parkour. Dying Light 2 also counts among MeinMMO’s best end-time games and best survival games. You can find our impression of the game here:
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2

The newest installment of the CoD series is a reboot of the famous Modern Warfare series. You play as a soldier in a setting in an alternative modernity – with all the technical gadgets that exist today.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is a classic shooter. Besides the rather short campaign, you will find a multiplayer part with many different game modes, from “Search and Destroy” to Team Deathmatch to the more arena-shooter-like Champion’s Hill.
Together with Modern Warfare 2, the battle royale Warzone was also updated to version Warzone 2. Warzone now also runs on the engine of Modern Warfare 2 and comes with a new map.
So if you prefer shooting against dozens of other players in shallow rounds, Warzone is an alternative. Warzone can be downloaded separately and is even free.
