The PS5 is getting its first major system update. In addition to several comfort features, starting today you can also copy PS5 games to an external hard drive and save them there or share gameplay. MeinMMO presents what to expect.
Sony has introduced the first major system update for the PS5 in the official PlayStation Blog (blog.de.playstation). This is the first official update for Sony’s next-gen console.
This is included in the update: With the update, you will get some new features and functions that you can use on the PS5:
- Save PS5 games on compatible external USB drives
- PS4 and PS5 players can now share Play
- Control and personalization options for PS5 consoles
- New features for the PlayStation App
When will the update come for the PS5? According to the official PlayStation Blog, the update will arrive today, April 14, 2021. A time has not yet been disclosed. System updates are usually initiated by the console itself. You don’t have to do much except create an internet connection.

Additional storage features for PS5 games
With the update, there is good news for players who have too little space on their console: you can now save PS5 games on compatible external USB drives.
- You can copy PS5 games from the PS5 and save them this way
- It is also possible to copy games back to the PS5.
This still does not work: You cannot start PS5 games from the external hard drive. They still need to be installed on the internal storage. Downloading to the external medium is also not possible. You must install games directly on the internal storage and can then save the game from there.
Sony has not announced any additional internal storage yet. According to an insider, you may be able to expand your PS5 storage space starting summer 2021. However, there is still no official confirmation.
PS4 and PS5 players can share screen together
This is offered by the update: With the new update, you can use share play from the PS5 on the PS4. This means that PS5 console players can show their friends on PS4 consoles the game screen or even let them try out PS5 games via share play.
So if you own a PS5 and are currently playing a great exclusive game that is only available on the PS5, you can let your friends try the game via share play on the PS4. This previously only worked within one console generation. An alternative was to stream games from the PS5 to the PS4 via Remote App. This way, you can even use the PS4 controller in PS5 games.
Improved menus and additional comfort options for the PS5
This is also included: With the update, you can make various fine adjustments to your console. Thanks to the improved game base menu, you can access content faster, or you can enable pre-downloads if you don’t want to wait long for an update. MeinMMO author Philipp Hansen expressed his frustration in his column about the cumbersome and nested menus of the PS5.
Also interesting is that you can now reorganize and hide games in your library. This way, you can navigate faster through your library and hide games that you are currently not playing. You can also now mute yourself in chat, adjust volume, or lower your colleagues’ volume.
Additionally, you can now set which trophies or achievements you want to save screenshots or videos for. Because these 15-second videos take up valuable storage space on the PS5. Therefore, we had previously advised you to turn off automatic trophy videos to save space.
With the new update, you can now limit the videos to, for example, gold or platinum trophies and save storage space.
