The first game for the upcoming PlayStation 5 has been officially announced and it already shows influences from some well-known titles. No wonder, as the developers are veterans of famous hits.
What kind of game is this? The title of the upcoming game is Godfall and it was presented during the Video Game Awards 2019. The first trailer already provides a small glimpse into the game.
Featured are three characters in thick, ornate armor with animal masks and weapons – including an apparently magical, burning sword. The three face a multi-headed dragon or a hydra attacking a tower.
When and where will Godfall be released? Godfall will be released along with the PlayStation 5, which is set to arrive for the Christmas season 2020. It will be available for both the PS5 and PC – here through the Epic Games Store.
Godfall – With influences from well-known games
These are the features: Much about gameplay and features is still unknown. However, the game is described by the developers as a “looter-slasher”, so presumably a loot shooter with melee weapons. On the official website of Godfall there is more information:
- Godfall offers coop for 2-3 players and singleplayer
- There will be legendary weapons and armor
- Action-packed melee combat in third person
Not much is known about the story yet, except that after a thousand-year war, an “apocalypse” was apparently initiated. Sounds a bit like Darksiders.
Some of these features also remind players of games like Destiny 2 or Diablo 3, especially the aspect of loot. Whether Godfall will be a service game is still undecided.
Who is developing the game? Behind Godfall is the developer studio Counterplay. It consists of veterans from noted and famous top titles such as:
- Call of Duty
- Destiny 2
- Diablo 3
- Evolve
- Gears 5
- God of War
- Overwatch
- Horizon Zero Dawn
- Ratchet&Clank

The developers became known with the card game Duelyst, which was released in 2016 on Steam. Here, the game has achieved a status of “very positive” with 81% positive reviews (as of December 15). Some community members even speculate that Godfall may take place in this universe.
As a publisher, Gearbox is behind Godfall, the creators of Borderlands. They recently achieved a new major hit with Borderlands 3.
