Final Fantasy XIV is a theme park MMORPG designed to delight fans of all Final Fantasy games. The latest expansion is inspired by Final Fantasy IX. Now, the head of the MMORPG is being asked about the status of a remake.
What does Final Fantasy IX have to do with the MMORPG? Final Fantasy XIV is a theme park MMORPG in many ways. This means that there are a lot of different content types available to pass the time:
You can:
- raid
- play the story
- engage in boss fights
- take on challenges such as the Palace of the Dead, treasure maps, and many mini-games in the Gold Saucer
- collect and craft items
On the other hand, the content of Final Fantasy XIV is also inspired by many other Final Fantasy games. The latest expansion Endwalker was primarily influenced by Final Fantasy IV, while the Stormblood alliance raid is based on Final Fantasy XII. The new expansion Dawntrail, in turn, has many callbacks to Final Fantasy IX.
Final Fantasy Remakes – After Seven, Now Nine?
What does Naoki Yoshida say about it? During the gamescom 2024, the colleagues from JP Games ask Naoki Yoshida whether they should have waited for a remake of the game from a marketing perspective alongside the expansion inspired by Final Fantasy IX.
Here is his answer:
Our original concept for Final Fantasy XIV was to serve as a theme park for the
Naoki Yoshida in conversation with JP Games, 08.09.2024Final Fantasyseries, and that’s why we wanted to incorporate Final Fantasy IX as well. We never thought about intertwining Final Fantasy IX in connection with aFinal Fantasy IXremake with Final Fantasy XIV – we never considered it in that commercial sense. Of course, it makes sense to think about it that way, but we never did.
Yoshida further explains that there are also many big fans of Final Fantasy IX in the MMORPG development team. The game is also very large. If the MMORPG team had to wait for the corresponding remake for every DLC, it would take a very long time from his perspective before there would be an expansion inspired by Final Fantasy IX.
Finally, Yoshi-P wishes any potential team that embarks on a remake of Final Fantasy IX good luck with the endeavor.
What are the current projects of Yoshi-P’s team? Naoki Yoshida is still the Director and Producer of Final Fantasy XIV. Meanwhile, he also leads Creative Studio III.
In addition to the permanently developing MMORPG XIV and its predecessor Final Fantasy XI, the studio is currently also working on the PC version of Final Fantasy 16, the latest title in the main series. Whether the team is currently working on additional games is not known at this time.
Naoki Yoshida has recently supported the father of Final Fantasy, Hironobu Sakaguchi, in publishing his RPG Fantasian as Fantasian: Neo Dimension via Square Enix on Steam, PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch.
For now, the focus of the Creative Studio III team will likely be on the 7.X patch series for Final Fantasy XIV. While Dawntrail received mixed feedback from players, they are now quite satisfied with the dungeons, for example: The head of Final Fantasy XIV was worried that the new dungeons might be too difficult – players say: “That’s how it’s fun!”
