A streamer has set himself the goal of consuming over 138,000 eggs in Final Fantasy XIV. Over 40,000 have already fallen victim to this, and there seems to be no end in sight.
The backstory in brief:
- In August 2020, the Australian voice actor and streamer Ross O’Donovan received 999 eggs from a FFXIV player in-game with the instruction to eat them all. He did as he was told and consumed the eggs for over an hour.
- The event drew a lot of attention on his server, Malboro, and players came from near and far to witness the spectacle and cheer Ross on in his mission.
- He then increased the number of eggs to 2020 to “make the strange year 2020 even stranger.”
Almost a year later, he is now on a mission to eat over 138,000 eggs. Because he can.
“This is the worst idea I’ve ever had”
This is Ross’s plan: On July 19, the streamer suddenly announced that he would log into the game and called on his followers to deliver him massive amounts of eggs. About 3 hours later, he announced that the eggs had now been gathered and that the public consumption would begin the next day.
Ross didn’t embark on this venture without a plan. The nearly 140,000 eggs should all be destroyed live on camera, even while Ross completed other content. He also set rules for a Subathon, that is, a subscription marathon:
- For every additional 1,000 subs, a 999 stack of eggs will be added to the existing amount.
- Ross can only consume dishes made from eggs in real life.
- If Ross needs to lie down for sleep, that will also happen live on stream.
If the number of subs exceeds 20,000 during the egg-eating event, Ross will shave his head and turn himself into an egg to attain ultimate enlightenment.
The streamer commented on the whole event with the words, “This is the worst idea I’ve ever had.”
This is happening right now: Currently (July 22, 2021, 1:22 PM), Ross is taking a break from his wild adventure and has laid down for a nap. Since one of the sub-goals has been reached, his stream remains online, and viewers can watch him take his nap.
During this time, the stream has between 1,400 and 1,500 viewers, who are busily spamming the chat command EGG to keep the egg-eating going. Fans in the chat are also discussing deeply philosophical matters like egg puns and egg memes.
If Ross had selected the category “Final Fantasy XIV Online,” his stream for the game would currently be the third largest after Summit1G with 14,700 and Maximilian DOOD with 8,600 viewers.

Here are reactions from the community: The enthusiasm with which fans cheered Ross on during his egg destruction in 2020 has apparently not dwindled in the past year. While the announcement of the egg event on Twitter garnered almost 16,000 likes (via Twitter), his stream is enjoying a high number of viewers.
In the game, he is surrounded by other players who cheer him on, shoot fireworks, or dance to provide moral support during his activity.
Especially eager fans have even drawn fan art of Ross or his character in the game and presented it to him as a tribute.
The streamer’s action once again shows that in MMORPGs and other online communities, even the strangest ideas can bring people together to have fun together. And that’s what gaming is all about.
