Final Fantasy XIV will receive its 6th expansion named Evercold in 2027. In addition to numerous updates and changes, a new alliance raid with anime references is drawing special attention.
What kind of crossover is this? At the fan festival in the USA, a collaboration between Final Fantasy XIV and the anime franchise Neon Genesis Evangelion was announced.
The anime, aside from the original series, has had several films, games, and mangas and is now considered a cult classic. At the fan festival, FFXIV game director Naoki Yoshida announced that there will be a crossover with Evangelion with the 6th expansion “Evercold”.
Specifically, it is an alliance raid for 24 players named “Ghosts of Desire.” Yoshida explained that he is a big fan of Evangelion himself (via gamespot.com). The Japanese animation studio Khara, responsible for the franchise and founded by Evangelion creator Hideaki Anno, is directly involved in the collaboration.
A short announcement teaser doesn’t show much, but already sets the mood for the raid with fitting music:
The players are divided
What is the community’s reaction? On Reddit, the collaboration between Final Fantasy XIV and Neon Genesis Evangelion initially causes a surprise.
Players did not expect it and are cautiously excited. However, there are also critical voices:
- “My reaction was just… what? I recognized the music immediately, but that was so far from my bingo card that it must be taking place in a Bizarro universe – so I only believed it once the name came up,” writes MCH.
- “Evangelion goes with anything that breathes – so I’m not really surprised. Just… how do they plan to make this work in any meaningful way?” wonders TheMightyMudcrab.
- “God, why? Evangelion is on the verge of mixing with everything that has ever existed,” Spikeymouth chimes in.
- “I prefer raids that take place within the own universe rather than crossovers with other media like the NieR raid, but this is so crazy that I somehow have to admire it,” Constellar-A adds.
Although some others believe it would be better to continue the internal lore, many users cannot help but feel excited about the crossover.
How exactly the alliance raid will look is likely to be clarified by future announcements.
What else has been announced? The collaboration with Neon Genesis Evangelion is just the tip of the iceberg. Final Fantasy XIV will receive some major changes with the expansion “Evercold,” including the following:
- New seasonal system: How to earn rewards and the item level increase will be revamped.
- New combat system: Players will be able to choose and switch between the Reborn mode and a new Evolution mode (tailored to jobs).
- Expanded arsenal: should ease playing with multiple jobs.
- Enhanced character customization: more options in personalizing your character.
Additionally, there will be new jobs, areas, dungeons, and much more. The maximum level will be raised from 100 to 110. “Evercold” is scheduled to be released in January 2027.
